I think they should not be banned... they provide fun for some users! but they are sort of spam. I think only 2 or 3 max quizzes should be submitted for one song. I'm tired of seeing some with the same songs. i usually don't take them, unless i know the song. so, whatever.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. Then you will be a mile away and they wont be able to hear you! Plus you will have their shoes. :) |

i honestly don't think they should be banned because people actually do play them. And a lot of people know the songs.

I have seen many of my thoughts echoed here - I had a hard time getting into the positive karma area when I first started Braingling because I tended to be a wee bit too blunt and outspoken when commenting on (Sorry, Itstar ) idiotic quizzes and comments. I find the typical "is this the correct lyric?" and "Fill in the blank: "Twinkle, twinkle, __________ star" quizzes tedious and boring, but there are some (lamentably few ) that are well thought out, with informative explanations. A total ban does not seem to be the best solution. Perhaps, if a quiz receives a high percentage of Easy and Boring ratings, the quiz creator should have some of their Quiz Creator points deducted? It would serve as motivation to keep the quality high and perhaps discourage the "I ground out 300 quizzes this week without thinking at all" spammers from littering the Braingle landscape with their drivel. (And I mean "drivel" in the most positive, uplifting, self-worth affirming manner, so keep your hands off of my Good Karma points! ) And while we're talking about cleaning up the irritating, idiotic, annoying QuizSpam, can't ANYONE do something about the plethora of SpongeBob claptrap littering the Quizscape? I mean, what's next - the Barney Fan Club?

I'm not in it for the points, I do it because I actually like the songs, and want to share them with the community. There are a few times where I've taken one and haven't heard of the song... look it up and end up liking it.
But I did not say 'no' solely on that reason. There are tons of pretty bad quizzes, along with pointless, annoying, and "why even bother?" If you don't like lyric quizzes, then simply don't take them. It's not hard to do.
I hate Jonas Brothers and Twilight quizzes, but why ban them? Some people like them. Just like people like lyric quizzes.
Oh, one thing to add.
It's the people who keep submitting the same type of quiz over and over who constantly get a bad rating... and STILL keep submitting them... those are the ones in it for the points only. I can point out an obvious one right off the top if my head!
I agree with you Cam.

I wonder if there was a way to award the submitter zero points for submitting a song already submitted but of course telling that person in advance that their song has already been hit... regardless of whether the questions are new... and then allow those who truly want to try and figure out the song the joy of figuring it out - even if they don't get any points for a song already submitted? A win win situation except for those who are trying to find loop holes in the system and just trying to get points for submitting the same song over and over for points.
I know a lot of songs most people on this site probably do not know... but that comes with age. Fun is fun... trying to have fun is what this site is all about - I think.

I think there are a lot of pointless quizzes. I love Harry Potter, don't get me wrong, but those quizzes run the gamut from being well written and thought-provoking to absolute nonsense. The problem is that you can't ban them without getting rid of the good with the bad. In the case of Twilight... well, when the source is badly written, what can we expect of the quizzes that are spawned from it? It's difficult to come out with a uniform method of deciding which quizzes should be allowed without severely limiting our ability to submit the quizzes we'd like to write about.
Perhaps what can be done to discourage spamming is to only give the full amount of points for the first quiz of a certain type and then less for the rest? Of course, then people will start inventing ways to create "new" types of quizzes that are still spam. Maybe it would be better to base points on popularity of the quizzes then?

well I think rather than just banning them outright there should be a limit to how many one can make on a certain amount of time...like two a month or something like that...just so people cant really spam them...plus the extra time the QM's could be using on the lyrics quizzes they could be using on other quizes....seriously I keep hearing people complian about how long it takes to get any reveiw back on their quizes...it might be solved by limitations
I pity your fears, I understand your doubts, let me absolve you of both. |

i dont mind taking the lyrics quizzes, yet i think if the quiz had a mandatory requirement of at least one or two trivia questions about the song then it would be better.
They could be like a stepping stone, for those who aren't good with grammar and punctuation like me (although i haven't made a lyrics quiz, you can check ). It starts them off by adding their own 2/3 questions on the quiz, not just copying and pasting.
