I wonder if it has got anything to do with the ASCII or Unicode code points.

I can't believe inputting random words doesn't return an error that breaks the code. Well, I reckon JQ's right in that words written containing hex letters (a to f) register a value, thus why words lacking any of the 6 letters is black. It has no value and thus is 0. I'm not quite sure how the value's placement is determined, however.
The length can change the colour, but I don't know why. For example the following two have the same hex letters but different arbitrary letters following. Thus they both are the same colour:

Adding extra endings, however, even one character extra, changes it, making it darker:

Adding multiple random valued letters also changes it significantly.

Perhaps it is the last six letters that change the value total? But then, shouldn't "acepiggyz," lacking all valued letters, be black? Instead it seems to retain some of its original colour.

Looks like it doesn't only register the last 6, otherwise the code below should be black. I'm not sure why that is.
