The Werewolf Game
Game #1450: Werewolf Game: Mage Edition I
This private game is moderated by Valcrist. Please read the rules and contact the moderator with any questions or concerns about this game.
This game finished in 5 rounds.
Story:
In a world where magic flows like water and great dragons slice through the skies as mighty corsairs in oceans of air, a tower of purest alabaster rode on an emerald wave over the Rithin Sea. This was Maelim, Tower of the Archmagi.
A robed figure walked softly down an alabaster corridor. In its hands, it held a long staff of bright metal, topped with a rough, green stone. The trailing ends of the fine robes whispered across the floor as the figure moved. It reached a door lacking any obvious knob or handle. With a casual wave of the staff, the door opened for the figure, sliding seamlessly down into the floor. The robed figure began to climb the stairs beyond the opened aperture, which quickly closed behind.
Outside the Tower, at the highest balcony, the figure emerged. Bright light illuminated a beautiful face and slender hands. Essiska, High Archmage, raised her magical staff and spoke words of great arcane power. The morning sky flashed violet and gold. A distant thunderclap was joined by a rising chorus of its fellows. As the tumult grew, a mighty rending sound was heard as a rift formed in the very air before the she-mage. Then all was suddenly quiet. Nothing issued from the rift. It simply hung in the air, quiet and expectant.
"It is as I feared, Maester," said the Archmage, her voice quiet. "Some of my Mages have used foul Necomancy and have become Liches."
A soft but unearthly voice replied from the rift. "Do you know who?"
Essiska shook her head. "No. They have used powerful warding magics to hide their natures. They could be any of my Mages."
There was a pause, and then "You know what you must do. The presence of the Undead cannot be tolerated."
Essiska bowed. "Yes, Maester. I will begin within the hour."
The rift in front of the Archmage wavered and vanished before she rose from her bow. Without so much as a pause, Essiska turned and re-entered the Tower.
* * *
Less than twenty minutes later, a great tolling as from a massive bell reverberated throughout the Tower of Maelim. Whispering and muttering, the Mages began to congregate in the Tower's central amphitheatre. As soon as all were gathered, Essiska appeared before them and addressed them.
"In all the sacred laws of Magic, none is more solemn than the law against the practice of Necromancy: the Magics of Death. Yet I have learned, to my shame, that its practice has taken root even here in Maelim, Citadel of the Magics of Light and Life. I know that among you lurk vile, undead Liches, cloaked in illusion and magics of non-detection. These abominations must be excised from our ranks before they destroy the rest of us. However, I know of no way to divine their natures, masked as they are from even my spells."
Essiska pause only briefly before continuing. "Therefore, I have determined that you all shall deduct each other's natures by your powers of logic and reasoning, in addition to what magics you find to be useful. I will spend each day preparing the spell to destroy the Mage you find guilty of Lichdom. I will also attempt to develop other means to pierce their illusions, but in the interim, all I can do is secretly empower one of you with the gift of Truesight. The Mage thus gifted may determine the true nature of one of his or her fellows once every night. Use the gift wisely."
There was a long silence then, as the implications of Essiska's pronouncements became apparent. Mages looked at their companions with suspicion as the knowledge that the Undead hid among their ranks. Before any accusations flew, however, the High Archmage raised her voice once more. "Our sworn duty is to safeguard the gift of Magic from the corruption of Evil. Do not fail. This cancer must be cut out now, before it can spread. You know what you must do."
The High Archmage Essiska retreated then to her private study, leaving the remaining Mages to their grim task.
THE BASICS: Being a private game, only those who are on my buddy list can sign up. If you would like to play, and are not already on my Buddy List, simply PM me your request with a sample of some of your recently completed TWG/WTB games. I'm making this one private to insure that we are all somewhat active players. Just stick to the rules and observe proper TWG etiquette. It keeps the game more fun for everyone. If anyone has any kind of posting problem, just PM me and we'll sort something out. The Seer is to be a Mage given their power by Essiska's will. Additional powers will become available during play and are discussed in depth below. If anyone remembers my games from about one year ago, this game is set in the same world. Players are encouraged, but by no means required, to post in-character. If anyone wants to pick an in-story name, I will list these names at the top post of each round. I have created a Talk Box for dead players. As always for this series, it will be called Astral Skies. You will only receive an invite if you die in this game. Once the game ends, everyone is invited until the next game begins.
Always remember: the most important rule is to have fun!
ROLES:
High Archmage Essiska: Moderator
Undead Liches: Werewolves
The Mages of Maelim: Humans
Truesight-Gifted Mage: Seer
Additional Power Rules:
As resourceful and skilled magic-users, both groups of players, the Mages and the Liches, will have access to skills and powers to aid them. The rules for these powers are as follows:
a) Even powerful Mages and Liches need time to prepare their spells. No player other than the seer will start with any power. Round 1 will be "powerless".
b) Before Round 1 Night ends, players will PM me a list of up to ten powers they would like, arranged in order of priority. Players are not limited to powers discussed in Round 0, but if a power has not been detailed previously, the player must explain it in their PM. Players can send their wish lists as early as the beginning of the round, but dawn of the next round is the cut-off deadline.
c) Beginning with Round 2, I will send a PM to each player informing them of their new acquisitions. I will decide how to allocate powers based on the wish lists, the identities of the deceased that round, the number of players remaining, and a healthy dash of randomness tossed in to taste. Players should expect to begin Round 2 with around 3-5 power options.
d) I am more likely to award powers to players who are role-playing, but not too much more. Role-playing alone will not earn a player a power if I have no other reason, but it will help me decide between to otherwise equal choices.
e) Powers cost some magical energy to cast. At the start of each round, including the first, I will grant each player their starting pool of energy by PM. Each unit is called a point of Gift. Each player earns two Gift points at the start of the first round and one additional point at the start of all other rounds. Every power costs some amount of gift to use. More potent powers have a higher cost and more trivial powers have a lower cost.
f) Whenever a player dies, their unspent points of Gift are distributed amongst the living players. A player killed at dusk has their points distributed among those who voted for them. A Mage killed at night has their points distributed among the Liches.
Basic Powers List:
This list is by no means exhaustive, and players may suggest others in their wish-lists. Any player may use the Mage powers, but only Liches can use their powers. Note: while a Lich can use any Mage power, some powers will be useless or all but useless to them. All the powers below were suggested by players. I have edited where appropriate. Unless otherwise determined, all powers must be used during the day, even when cast by Liches.
Mage powers:
Clairvoyance: Ability to reveal identities of one player who has been shot/eaten. The Moderator will post the identity in the round the player uses the power. May be countered by Confusion. 3 Gift
Far Seeing (Seer only): The Seer can identify two people. First is voted, the other in PM. If a Lich is using Clouded Vision, the Seer is allowed to vote a Seer choice only, and loses the PM option. 2 Gift. May only use once.
Protective Field: Protects the caster (or another player of the caster's choice) from magical attack. Gives protection for one full round (Day + Night). The player will be listed as protected at the top of the round. The player may still be shot/eaten, but no powers will work, including the Seer's ability (the seer must choose another target). 3 Gift
Telepathy: Send a ciphered message anonymously to a fellow player via a PM to the Moderator. Useful for the Seer or any player with useful information (suspicions or warnings). If the message is not ciphered it will not be sent. 2 Gift
Whispers from Beyond: Anonymous message from dead Mage to fellow player. Not Ciphered, and sent by the Moderator. However, this message can go to anyone, Mage or Lich. The sender must be sure he knows who he's sending it to. Only usable immediately following death. Disabled after the player accepts the invitation to the Astral Skies. Costs no Gift.
Trap: Force random Lich to say "I am a Lich" in white text. The message may be as carefully hidden as possible, but it must appear in one of the Lich's posts. The Lich may even opt to have the Mod insert it in a post in a previous round with 2 Gift points. The Mage will not have any hint as to which Lich is forced to do this. 5 Gift
Time Travel: Ability to see who the Liches voted for in a previous Night round. Possibly useful for deduction purposes. Reveals how many votes went to each Mage. 4 Gift
Greater Protection: Protects from Lich attacks for one Night. The Moderator will PM the Liches informing them that the protected Mage may not be eaten. If a Lich does vote for the protected Mage, that Lich's identity is revealed the next morning. 4 Gift
Veritas: The player must not lie while the curse is in effect, he/she however can choose to remain silent or try to bend the truth. 3 Gift
Free Will: Counters magic used to control the player, such as Black Telepathy or Trap. 2 Gift
Mind Manipulation: The power to force High Archmage Essiska to speak a phrase with a limited number of characters. The High Archmage Essiska will not be able to dispute what she was forced to say and would actually believe that she said what she said from free will. She will also believe what she says. Mind Manipulation costs a number of Gift equal to one third the number of characters requested, rounded up to the nearest integer. (1-3 characters costs 1 Gift, 4-6 costs 2, ect.) If the phrase would reveal the identity of a player, it costs 1 extra Gift. Spaces do not count as characters for the purposes of this power.
Lich-only Powers:
Black Telepathy: Control a Mage's mind and force the Mage's actions and speech for the duration of a round. (The Mage will receive in PM from Mod instructions from anonymous Lich and must obey them. Passing hints in white text or other means is forbidden, except in the case of the Lich requesting it for intent to mislead). 3 Gift
Clouded Vision: Force Seer to not Divine. Mod will send Seer a PM informing the Seer of this. 2 Gift
Confusion: Ability to confuse the revelations from a Mage with Clairvoyance, as well as reveal the Clairvoyant's identity. 2 Gift
Fog: Just-for-fun. If a Fog is used, everyone has to post in white for the whole round. 1 Gift
Forced Hand: Force a Mage's Day vote. The Mage cannot give any hint that his vote is being influenced, and should try to come up with a logical explanation for the vote to appear as if it was his own choice. The Mage is never allowed to reveal the vote was forced. 3 Gift
Enervation: Target Mage loses all their Gift points and must start collecting all over again. 4 Gift

"When Reality is Fantasy and Fantasy is Reality, it's time for lunch." "Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup."
Hello Valcrist. I don't really need an in-game name since my user name would work just fine in this case.
Nice adaptations of my power suggestions, Valcrist. My in-game name will be "Modul". I came up with it by thinking about radio terms, and "modulation" came to mind.
I will now resume lurking silently.

MOD POST: For future reference, all powers will be listed in this round only on my post. I will edit in others as appropriate.
Good to see you both here! I am inviting more players as we "speak". The game will be somewhat shorter, of course, and that affected the Gift costs of some of the powers. Throwing in a 10 Gift power or two would have been silly. In later games with more players I will most likely introduce such high-cost powers for consideration. Feel free to keep the power suggestions coming. Just because I formalized them does not mean that I cannot consider new additions.

Good idea I think there has been less activity here lately everyone seems to be pretty busy. Since I got my name from a book about 2 sister witches it seems like I can keep it in the game.BTW Kethry was the white witch in the book
I am waiting for a couple of the in-progress games to finish for some additional players, but in the interim, does anyone here know of someone I should be talking to that I might not have considered?

Hmm, all the best ones don't seem to be online anymore. If they were, I'd recommend:
Daffidd
dddlite
Dutchymonster
Jervis
Legalmumbojumbo
Physicsphenom
Shaidar9haran (who I saw online yesterday, but can't be online often)
The list goes on.

I remember Dutchy, Physics, and Shairdar. The others are new names to me. Well, I will send them a PM on the off-chance anyway. Thank you.

In this Episode, the part of "Siris" will be played by The Fox
Hi fox, welcome! Sry can't be really much help in recruiting since I'm still new here.
Welcome Auntiesis! Feel free to choose a name or not. It's up to you.
Half-way! Just five more!

In my one TB game, "money game", there were also powers that had to be paid for using imaginary money (like your "gift". And there were ridiculously expensive powers. Except that you could give money to other people, so all the players could contribute towards the cost of a really expensive power by giving their money to a single player. Of course, if said player was a wolf, then he could just run off with the cash.
I can't think of anything interesting to put here. Sorry.
Thanks to the system whereby unused Gift goes to others when you die, similar things can happen in this game, but most Mages (and Liches!) are too inherently selfish to share power voluntarily, even Mages of Light.

I played that game the wolves made me a wolf I think in the third round and I wish they would have waited cuz I was getting ready to buy the "Mod declares me human" in the very next round but I didn't get the chance to and it ended up being my downfall. It was still a very fun game coolguy.
Hopefully we'll have some additional vets soon. I don't know if anyone else has been watching the active games, but we have some really good players tied up in the last few rounds of some of those games. If you see anyone you know in those games, please mention this one, should you bump into them in the metaphorical grocery store!

But seriously, I'm having mixed success recruiting additional players. I hope to see some more faces around here shortly.

Out of curiosity, are the powers we choose in the first round permanent or can we change or add more powers in later rounds? Also how many powers would a Undead Lich, The Mage of Maelim and the Truesight-Gifted Mage get respectively.
As for a new power Kethry post gave me an idea.
Mind Manipulation: Any mage has the power to force High Archmage Essiska to speak a phrase limited to 10 characters. The High Archmage Essiska will not be able to dispute what she was forced to say and would actually believe that she said what she said out of her own free will. She will also believe what she says.
This power can me modified by the amount of gifts used to increase the amount of characters that the mage could force High Archmage Essiska to say.

After some thought, I have edited the power rules as follows: (edits are in large type and italicized)

"When Reality is Fantasy and Fantasy is Reality, it's time for lunch." "Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup."
b) Before Round 1 Night ends, players will PM me a list of up to ten powers they would like, arranged in order of priority.

Mind Manipulation costs a number of Gift equal to one third the number of characters requested, rounded up to the nearest integer. (1-3 characters costs 1 Gift, 4-6 costs 2, ect.) If the phrase would reveal the identity of a player, it costs 1 extra Gift.

I am thinking that I may join the C&I game I am going through TWG withdrawals if I get shot or eaten and this game is still waiting then I will rejoin I do really enjoy your games Val but the activity level here on braingle has been a little slow lately and with all the good games out there it makes the signup process drag out. I'll be back soon if I can.
Sorry Valcrist going to sign up for another game and come back here right away if i get shot or eaten early. Want to get some more experience playing TWG. Message me on any new developments or if you need some form of help that i could assist you with.
*stands on a soap-box and looks at the sky with defiance* I will persevere to the last!!!!! But seriously, I will keep this game open for a while longer yet. If this game takes three more days to start, however, I will package it up and save it as a text file on my computer for a later release and just play some WWGs without modding until I've built up a stronger reputation. Three days. Let's see some players!

Man, So sorry for you. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I got this underwhelming of a response on the revival of my pirate WTB games. I'll stick it out with you, and hope you get some players.
I will now resume lurking silently.
I will now resume lurking silently.
Don't worry to much about it. In the words of Parson Grotti: "We try things. Occasionally they even work." Just because this revival has failed to impress me does not mean I will at all give up. If we do not get the necessary players, I will then simply try a different strategy. Even playing in other people's games to build reputation adds to the goal of running this series. Abandon mope!

I JUST got out of that game! 11 rounds and even though I am always apparently suspicious, no one felt I was suspicious enough to shoot! As far as more players, Stoberman might be a fun addition. He is my hubby and is actually a pretty decent player (when he doesn't vote for me as a joke and get himself shot! ). Can you add him to your buddy list?

Absolutely! Good to have you both!
Now that we have more players again, I'm rescinding the deadline. Yay for perseverance! Let's get those last five players!

Such creativity and eloquence deserves reward Valrcist.

(I'll try to play, but I have little experience with role play unless Horsey for my Grandkids counts.)

Hi Zona! Val makes these games really easy to follow. I'm not a big RPGer either!

Hi Tonja. If your hubby joins, I can try and make amends for the "welcome" he received in his first game.

I have been noticing that, in many games nowadays, the player who posts first reserves a post at the top for the Moderator. For story purposes, I would appreciate it if whoever that turns out to be in a given round does so. I would like each round's story post to be at the very top, along with the name list. After all, it's hardly ever a bad idea to do favors for your Mod!

Hello everybody. In an effort not to be shot or eaten again in the first round I shall resoundingly say no one should be shot or eaten.

I still think this will be a great game, but we are taking off for a week and I would hate to be an inactive in this game especially... Sorry.. I do want to get into a game with Valcrist because of the great writing.

We have five slots open. Keep the invites flowing! We'll get this game started one way or the other!

At the rate we're going, you'll get your slot back after your week away.
I can't think of anything interesting to put here. Sorry.
It does seem to be the trend. Hmm. To be honest, I would hate to have such great players sitting stagnant here too long. Let us put it to a vote (I will abstain). If the majority want's me to put this game on ice until I have re-established my reputation on Braingle (and arranged ahead of time with potential competitors!) then I will save the pertinent information on a text file and restart it later. If the majority votes for me to cling to the dream as the intrepid marooned sailor to his make-shift raft, then I will do so. You guys are just too good of players to be stuck here unless you truly want to be here. Patience or Persistence. The choice is yours.

Well, a lot has been put on my plate and the game seems to be starting off a tad slow, so perhaps the best course of action is to put the game on hold for a while.
I love your games and I know we'll have a blast when it kicks in...and personally, I'm not in a huge hurry, so I guess I am okay with sticking it out. Sorry it's such a slow take-off though...

Well I am back and I have some time now to wait it out with the rest of you die hards
Good to see you Kethry! We were voting whether to:
A) Postpone for a later date (when I have more of a reputation to compete with the rest!),
or
B) Perservere despite all odds! Once more unto the breach, dear friends . . . *stops quoting Shakespeares's Henry V before he makes a fool of himself (too late!)*
I will pass, and will keep the vote going until all pending votes are in.

I shall be Murgar if that is acceptable
I only hope Stoberman and The Fox come back to Braingle before the game begins... they have been absent for several days.

Jubilations! With the surge, considering the earlier votes, I am officially ruling that we will persist. Keep the invites going! If all goes well in this game, we can try for a larger game next time. And there will be a next time, I assure you all.
I cannot speak for Stoberman (Tonja? Anything we should know about?), but The_Fox goes to the same college I do. We're on break until Monday, so I'm not surprised that he's not on. I'll do what I can to get in contact.
