MOD EDIT: Thanks

Alright, my best and brightest, I have received this cipher from an agent in Genovia through the telegraph:

"All night," George quite hesitantly inquired.

The boy, very nervous about everything George had mentioned, covered his eyes. He replied, "Mister, I didn't! You have to call my mom. Let her explain!"

"Understand, if you ever-"

----

But something happened during the transfer. I fear the worst for our agent. The message was cut off and the telegram just repeated "3W, 3W, 3W" for one hour.

Use your best skills to decipher this. You will be rewarded. Let's beat these scum!

So, I was told you all had a game going on and didn't let me know about it! How rude! *hmphs*

Then, I found the game, and it had one spot left. So, what could I do? I just had to join, didn't I? Just as a disclaimer, though, I do have an extremely busy schedule, including studies, work, etc., but I figured this would be a good source of procrastination.

Anyhoo, I do need to get to bed, and seeing as how I am the first person on here, there isn't much to go off of yet. I will be back on tomorrow, though.

I also think you will not be the only one here for long :noway:

We've got some time, so I'm in no rush to vote, however, I plan on voting for someone inactive if there is any by this time tomorrow night.

Simba, yeah, limerick and I are friends. Same with el, skinny (witty kitty), tuku, and nicats.

4wheels, I appreciate the SPF as much as anyone else, but I might consider voting for someone inactive. Somewhere I've got written a great reason why it is best to shoot in actives first, I'll have to try and find it, not easy since I've lost all mu records of previous games when my wiki disappeared.

In the end I know you will vote where your gut tells you, but I have seen more good games ruined by inactive people. :/

I still maintain that putting me in charge of that nuthouse a scant 15 minutes before the end of my work day was a tactical error. In fact, the only thing that was "in charge" was Limerick's taser, which I have absolutely no idea how he got into his cell.

Yay, we've started! I was busy this weekend and afraid it'd start before I could get back on, but then I remembered the 2-day rounds. That can be helpful!

First thing I thought of when I saw the "3W" was World Wide Web (www).

I'm going to go see if we have any multi-day Inactives for a seer protection vote (SPV). If there aren't any, I'll hold my vote for now.

Edit to add: Hm, nope. No one Inactive more than 1 day. So, I'll wait to vote until we get some more time under our belts.

I am not very good at clues in games, but I will do my best to try and decipher some of them. 3W could mean what, when, and where. Or why. I also thought of 3 wolves when I first read it, but that is almost too simple. 3W's is 6V's: VV VV VV. I don't see how that could help us, though. I am going to play around with some of the codes and ciphers to see if I can come up with anything.

Since we've still got plenty of time left in the round, I will hold off on voting until later on in the round.

For the time being, I'm going to toss out an SPV. I know it's early, but it'll be easier to tell who's inactive by who hasn't voted, as some might vote, but not post. (Though it's not recommended)

I won't bother posting my analysis or thought processes regarding "3W" until I have something that might be useful. Also, I'm wondering if the fact that it was repeated for exactly an hour has anything to do with it. The fact that a timeframe was mentioned at all makes me think that it has some significance.

More to come...

Sorry fo the inactivity guys, I had no idea that the game had started! For now I'll vote for anyone who is inactive, unless someone appears to be extremely suspicious.

As for the cipher, It seems that one of the two, most likely the child, is a spy. I think this because the man was cut off while talking. This could also be wrong, as the man was the one who seemed he was about to pull the trigger on the boy, and he could just be defending himself. Or maybe someone els came and attacked him, a fellow spy? For the 3W, I am strongly convinced that that stands for 3 wolves. Still nothing conclusive, or that would help us in anyway though.

[Edit] @Mocha, didyou ever find out what limerick did to get us to propose to you?

[Edit] I'm an idiot, don't listen to me, this isn't about werewolves, it's about spies!

Hey guys, for clarification: The ciphers are not the clues. There is a correct answer to the cipher, which must be PMed to me and the first person to do so correctly gets the actual clue.

uloseha has posted a vote, so I would take them off the inactive list. Disappointing they are not posting, but they are at least participating.

Looks like we are just waiting for nicats, Kaipper and jpost to be here, but it is likely their absence has to do with the timing of the game starting, rather than actual inactivity. However, come tomorrow morning if we still haven't heard from them, one of them will get my vote.

Kaipper and nicats have not been online today, so it makes sense that they have not posted, but jpost has been online, which means that he would have seen the notification of the game starting and still did not come. @El You are totally ridiculous

This clue is definitely stumping me so far...

As a cipher I am approaching it as 3 W meaning 3 and Words

I have tried:

3 letter words (all the boy had his you mom let her you... starts off well...)
Every third word starting from the first (All quite the nervous George covered he...)
Every third word starting with the third (George inquired very everything...
Every third word starting from the last (Ever understand let call...)
The third word in each paragraph (George very you)
The third word from the end of each paragraph (If let quite)
The first word in each paragraph (3 total words) (All the understand)
The last word in each paragraph (Inquired explain ever)
The third letter in each word (LGOI...)
The third word in each quotation (Mister you call let understand ever)
Third word in each quotation starting with the 3rd (Didn't to mom...
The 3rd to last word in each quotation (If let..)
3 words that appear off or misused... Nothing here, hesitantly inquired feels potentially stretched as does the ending, "Understand, if you ever.."

And probably more I haven't mentioned....

Also of note, there is not a single W within the cipher text, adding w's to the words does not particularly create anything new other than the word wall at the beginning...

As far as activity, I can't say I am thrilled with anyone not talking whether they vote or not >_> It is pretty much impossible to pin someone down based on voting patterns alone so.... it kind of grates against the spirit of the whole game and potentially is worse than being idle. It shows you are here but can't even bother to say SPV or something... I don't know. If it is totally innocent though and simply a case of wanting to participate but not having time... I think we have two days to figure that out.

This cipher is really bugging out my mind...Any ideas?

Hello everyone! I'm not a cipher genius or anything, and Limerick's clearly much more into it than I am But I was thinking it might have something to do with repeating "3W" for an hour?

3W x 60 minutes = 180W

Made me think that it might be the 180th word, but the post doesn't have 180 words :/ So I'm not sure right now. I'll check back later to vote.

Might as well say as well before anyone else bothers trying, I tried all 25 Caesar ciphers, none of them worked I wasn't expecting much, because, after all, it would be rather difficult to hide that and maintain an English sentence, but still... nothing. Transposition ciphers also seem fruitless. Sooooo, I am still at a bit of a loss xD

ETA: Interesting, the cipher post has changed verrrrry slightly....

tuku edited it from: "3W, 3W, 3W" for an hour -> "3W, 3W, 3W" for one hour.

I have to agree with Elios. Uloseha did vote, yes, but did not post even to say "SPV." Just imagine if everyone here were to vote but not post...it would make for a pretty random game. I would feel bad putting Uloseha in a majority if he/she has a good reason for not being able to post when he/she voted. So, I will hold off on throwing a vote that way, but if Uloseha has not posted by tonight, I am leaning towards voting that way (unless something more substantial surfaces).

Also, I couldn't come up with anything as far as the cypher is concerned. I am at a complete loss as to what it could be... Then again, I have not been very good at cyphers in the past, so... xD

Well, since time somehow seems important in this cipher, I will look at that a little deeper.

Per Wikipedia:

Transmission speeds vary from 5 words (25 characters) per minute, by novice operators, up to about 30 words (150 characters) per minute by skilled operators.

Thus, we are looking at anything between 1500 and 1800 characters per hour.

From this, we have a 8 character repeated CSV string, which, depending on how you look at it could also be 6 characters, yielding 250-300 or 187.5-225 repetitions. Also possible is this is either supposed to be taken as a per minute example meaning we would have 60*3W*3 = 540Ws, or a per second example, in which case we have 3600*3*3W = 32400Ws...

Neither of these numbers jump at me with an obvious significance. It could also not be a timed sample, and have us to suppose 60 of them total, 60 3W.

What is interesting also is that literally speaking... This would look as follows...

3W, 3W, 3W 3W, 3W, 3W

Whether this should be taken literally is another question all together.

Continuing...

Beyond the 3W interpretation, it could also mean, as discussed 3 watts, but that seems unlikely... It could also mean 3 weeks to fit within the time interpretation, it could also mean 3W longitude, 3 steps west perhaps too. Or even perhaps with 60 3 W case, be 60N 3W or even 63W.

It simply does not work for a secret key cipher, as 3W never appears within the message.

To arrange it in a 3W grid...

All Night George
Quite Hesitantly Inquired
The Boy Very
Nervous About Everything
George Had Mentioned
Covered His Eyes
He Replied Mister
I Didn't You
Have To Call
My Mom Let
Her Explain Understand
If You Ever

Not seeing anything there.

Still working here. Store closed.

ETA: Oops, multiplied 60*30wpm rather than 60*150char=9000... I don't really have enough there to keep focusing on the rest of the math though. Change those maxes to 1500 and 1125 and you will get the idea...

ETA 2: Using calculator deciphering (imagine 3W written on the led display and flipping it) this would become ME, ME, ME... meaningful, maybe, but telling us anything? :/

ETA 3: Well, P=IV, 1 Watt = 1 CV/s, 3W = 3CV/s. For 3600 seconds, this is 10800CV. CV,Curriculum Vitae means resume, so they are requesting us mail 10800 copies of their resume? *hides*

ETA 4: Okay, let's go a different path.... Telegraphs generally transmit in morse code... 3W in morse code is...

...-- .-- for 1 hour...

1 is .----, so, if the W were a cut off one, we could be dealing with 31, but I don't see anything here either...

Men, I have a lot of super secret meetings at night, therefore, if you want to make a go at the cipher, it must be done by the end of the day it is given. There is no penalty for a wrong guess, but if you don't answer it at all, we are more likely to lose our men.

Hmm... nothing... closest thing that made sense was "George George didn't let her explain. Understand if you ever-" which is every word that contains 3 (so 3, 13, 23, 30, 31, 32, 33...) or "George George didn't understand" (3, 13, 23, 33)... any ideas?

Expected Actual Occurrences

a 8.2% 4.2% 8
b 1.5% 1.0% 2
c 2.8% 1.0% 2
d 4.3% 4.7% 9
e 12.7% 15.2% 29
f 2.2% 0.5% 1
g 2.0% 3.1% 6
h 6.1% 4.7% 9
i 7.0% 7.3% 14
j 0.2% 0.0% 0
k 0.8% 0.0% 0
l 4.0% 4.2% 8
m 2.4% 2.6% 5
n 6.7% 5.8% 11
o 7.5% 5.8% 11
p 1.9% 1.0% 2
q 0.1% 1.0% 2
r 6.0% 6.3% 12
s 6.3% 3.1% 6
t 9.1% 6.8% 13
u 2.8% 3.7% 7
v 1.0% 3.1% 6
w 2.4% 0.0% 0
x 0.2% 0.5% 1
y 2.0% 4.2% 8
z 0.1% 0.0% 0

Frequency analysis of the cipher text doesn't seem to show much either, suggesting very little word manipulation on a letter basis was done, if any. A couple peaks here and there, it is ironic that W is one of those said peaks that is unexpectedly low here... Anything?

ETA: 50% variance from the norm (non expected zero): A - low, C - low, F - low, W - low (yes, it is zero, but unexpectedly so)

Nothing. I can't make sense of it. At times I feel like it's just out of reach, but I can't put anything together. Switching my vote to uloseha for obvious reasons.

So this has just been brought to my attention, the answers to the ciphers do not necessarily have anything to do with the actual plot, because then they could also be used as clues. I will also not consider anything an answer unless it is PMed to me.

ANSWER: 3W-1 was the key to read the cipher which is in blue. Every 3rd Word, 1st letter.

"All night," George quite hesitantly inquired.

The boy, very nervous about everything George had mentioned, covered his eyes. He replied, "Mister, I didn't! You have to Call my mom. Let her explain!"

"Understand, if you ever-"

Which ends up being "Give me my clue"
