Who's The Boss

Who Will Fall and Who Will Leaf: ROUND 1
Welcome to the game, and thank you to everyone for joining!
For the most part, standard rules and expectations apply. Please be active when possible, be respectful of others' opinions, write using correct mechanics (I promise I won't go Grammar Nazi on you, but no excessive chat-speak, please), remember to vote / hack the network / submit the memo, etc.
A few game-specific details:
There will be a "special role" called "Humpty Dumpty" (based upon the idea of "fall"). This role will be randomly assigned from amongst all 15 players (Boss and Rat included) the first round; each successive round, it will fall to the player with the most constructive, game-related posts.
Double posting will generally be penalized, with the exception of a Voting List post should you make one, and if nobody else has posted after three hours (only double post if your above post is reasonably lengthy or has already been edited for added content).
The role will change hands each round, and no person may hold the role more than twice per game. If needed, I will consider second, third, etc. runner-ups for the number of posts made.
Humpty Dumpty will be able to provide firing immunity to one player besides him or herself, effective that round (if the person is a mandatory firing, this power cannot help). No one person may receive immunity more than once per game, not even for non-consecutive rounds; if all remaining players have received protection in a previous round, this protect becomes void.
The person whom Humpty Dumpty protects is allowed to ask the Boss a psych question for the next round. If this person does NOT submit a question by the end of voting, I will ask a question instead.
One Additional Important Note: As a moderator, I usually (when possible) try to delay approving the memo until all players have signed in so that nobody is cleared from login times alone. I should have specified this before, and I apologize for not clarifying sooner. This notice is not meant to frame or clear anybody, and it is entirely possible, but also not necessarily true, that the Boss submitted his or her memo "a while" back and I simply did not approve it until just now.
GreenApples27 will be the Humpty Dumpty for this round. This was randomly selected by submitting the list of player names to a random list generator, randomizing the entries, and taking the name of the player listed first in the randomized list.
Please note any additional suggestions or questions below, and good luck!

Well my first thought is that the boss is someone who lives in a region that gets super cold in the winter, though he could just be toying with the words. I live in southern California, and though it gets down to the 30's, and that is freezing temperatures, I tend to think of the areas that get blanketed with snow and ice as getting more super cold.

I am voting for Shadows because she lives in Canada, a country known for its harsh winters. Feel free to join me in this vote if you wish. (MoO rounds help the boss find the rat and usually clear no one)
The use of Autumn would seem to point to an older person, since children in the US seem to be more familiar with the term, Fall. But nothing is that straightforward here on Braingle!
Nothing in the PA indicates whether Fall or Spring is approaching, so we can't conclude anything about the boss' hemisphere. Pumpkins and turkey certainly seems an American tradition, between Halloween jack-o'lanterns and Thanksgiving turkey dinner and pumpkin pies. Please tell us if these traditions are celebrated elsewhere!

I am voting for the dancing banana, Omaha345.
I think the two sentences with autumn are quotes. Lustre is also spelt the British way. But again, it is a part of the quote.

Both good points. I live in central Texas; we don't get snow here either, and only see freezing temperatures maybe twice a year (and never for extended periods, unfortunately).I will accept caberet's invitation and join her vote for Shadows. May as well start clearing people early....

At the risk of becoming a lemming, I'll join the clearing vote for Shadows (although I may change my vote if we look like we aren't going to make the majority... I don't want to be voted out in the first round )

I did notice the comment in the Boss answer: "Leaves change color, there are carnivals and harvests and celebrations before everything freezes and we get cold unbearable winters." and it made me think of when I lived in the Midwest (Ohio). We did have fall carnivals and harvest parties which is not something that we have here in CA. I'm not sure how many different areas do have these type of celebrations when Fall arrives, so I'm not sure where to place my vote as of yet.
Also, as Randy pointed out, CA does not really get the really cold and freezing winters that the Boss spoke of. Very few areas in CA (mostly mountain areas) even get snow.
For now, I'm going to place a safety vote for ppjones because I am not comfortable joining any majority this early in the game.
SMILE and people will wonder what you are up to!

Good luck, GA, er, I mean Humpty Mach 1. Although I would like my turn at the role, I have to go to ______ for most of the day today, so I might not be the best or most frequent poster.
I'm not going to hop on the Shady bandwagon yet. Since we might not have too many mandatories, I don't want to be fired (as selfish and egotistical as that sounds) so I'll vote for Mikey because of the similarly cold climate and lack of votes.
Apologies if this has been said (I'm in a bit of a hurry and time to look back) does Humpty's pardoning/their choice's question have to be public and occur at a certain time?
See you guys later.
Why didn't the Libertarian cross the road?

Well, 4demo, when do I choose the immune player? And who finds out I chose the certain player - just the boss or everyone?
This is exciting.
Well, it's currently one of my closest friend's birthday today, so I can't stay on for too long - haven't got her a present yet - so I'll log in a vote for who I think is a possible boss. To me it's starting to sound like RGW4 or talanpoe. I will lock in a vote for talanpoe. My vote has changed - read further to see why.
EDXIT: Something interesting to note, is that the boss starts his psyche answer in first person, "i like fall..." then changes to what I would say is not second person, but more like one does something when they say, "You work hard..." and then returns to first person to end the psyche answer, "Need I say more?". I just thought I'd bring this up, because possibly it could incriminate a younger, or unemployed player, as they only change to the different person when talking about working. So after this sudden epiphany (no I'm only kidding ) I'll change to Shadows, so you can scratch my vote for talanpoe.

GreenApples27 will be the Humpty Dumpty for this round. This was randomly selected by submitting the list of player names to a random list generator, randomizing the entries, and taking the name of the player listed first in the randomized list.

Yikes, my apologies! I was envisioning the immunity being similar to in jtolley's TWG, where Humpty Dumpty would just announce the player to be protected as soon as possible (preferably in the first post made) but cannot change whom s/he chooses to protect. Then this player has the rest of the round to post a psych question. Both the name and question would be posted in this game for everybody to see. Is that alright with everybody?

Well, personally I was going to wait until I got an idea as to who would become lemmings, then I would announce who I was going to protect from being fired.
To aid a majority on Shadows, whoever changes and/or votes Shadows as the majority will go into the draw of being chosen as my immune player. No point in giving immunity to someone who doesn't have a risk of getting fired in the first place!
As for my psyche question, I can do that now! Give me one second.

Oh, I got it. I'll announce now then.
By the powers invested in me as I hold the position of Humpty Dumpty, I reward immunity to the one and only Miss Froggygg.
froggygg, you can now feel comfortable joining the majority, and personally, if you don't join the majority you have wasted my only chance at giving someone immunity, and you will also waste a round... So please join the majority for Shadows.
Also, you'll be pleased that the Psyche Question ties into both the "Fall" and "Leaf" theme. Personally, I think it's quite clever.
Psyche Question: "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" is a philosophical riddle that questions observation and knowledge. Do you believe the unobserved world functions as the observed world does? What are you theories to this famous philosophical riddle?
Do you think that this Psyche Question is sufficient?

How predictable. I knew a bunch of people would be voting for me. We don't have carnivals and celebrations and such, though... or maybe I just don't notice.
The leaves on a tree in my backyard are bright yellow right now. So pretty. The only reason I don't like autumn is the fact that it is followed by winter.
Anyway, I will vote for RGW4, mostly because he didn't state a vote, and Bosses tend to forget to do that.

I'll join in on the vote for Shadows. I personally don't participate in fall carnivals/parties, but it does get really cold in winter here. I only like fall because of the leaves. I'd type more today, but my joints hurt (so much for being young, lol), so I'm going to have to call quits. I'll definitely be on tomorrow though.
Well first off Shadows, I commented during the very first hour of the new round and I only commented to let everyone know I was about. At 7:16 in the morning, I am getting ready to go to work... not a lot of time to do much else. I came back on line around 2-3 PM today (PST time) but only had a few moments to do anything and had a couple chess games to make a play on.
Second, Canada does have celebrations, including an earlier Thanksgiving than the US... and though you may not recognize it, they do occur, and don't you celebrate Christmas? Sort of a far off chance Canada has NO celebrations or carnivals, isn't it? A carnival can be something as simple as a county type fair with a ferris wheel and some games (like basketball toss, dime in the dish...etc...), I sort of doubt Canada doesn't have any of these types of events. Sometimes people translate the memo to mean one thing when it might mean something else.
In any case, no problem voting for me, I know I am safe.
I will put a safety vote in for changhill ... first rounds are the hardest to make a good choice.
Edit: vote confirmed

Wow... I read it on Wikipedia and I am still confused a bit. Sort of like which came first, the chicken or the egg?
I would hate to open a box where I thought there was a dead cat to have it jump out at me... there goes my heart.

SMILE and people will wonder what you are up to!
The good news is that the majority is enough to either clear Shadows or put her in hot water. With no other majorities close, the people who voted for Shadows are either fired, or no one is fired, or people are fired who have not voted for Shadows.
Question... maybe it was already stated... but 4demo... will you say if someone is a mandatory firing or will we have to try and figure it out? Many moderators like to do this so there is no confusion that the boss had nothing to do with the firings but it was the act of the employee. Personally, I think its better to mention that the firing was mandatory, because employees who are inactive make the game less fun when they sign up and do not particiapate.

So far, Hadleigh, JLP and ppjones are the only ones yet to state a vote. But we have plenty of time left for others to vote. I personally don't believe that Shadows is the boss, so I will stick with my vote for now.

2 day rounds gives you heaps of time to vote. I will not be voting for Shadows as that memo does not sound like her to me. There is something familiar about the psych answer that reminds me a little of Randy, so my vote is for RGW4 this round.

Hey everyone, I see you have all figured out that I'm not the boss, here is RSA specifically Natal where I stay, our winter temp doesn't go below about 12 degrees Celcius, our summers hit the forties and we are currently celebrating spring. We don't have 'Fall' but rather Autumn, don't have 'Thanksgiving' and never have Halloween... yes I have NEVER gone trick or treating before, sad I know. I think I will vote for RGW4, they seem a bit to eager. Please also note that I live in the Southern Hemisphere so I'm sleeping while you guys are playing, that's why I haven't posted yet.

Read about Schrödinger's cat.
The Quantum Physicist's answer to zombie cats. You sure don't want to be cleared
That being said I don't think I'll vote that way as long as we can clear Shadows without the vote. If not I'll help along.
I think its better to mention that the firing was mandatory
Whether it's revealed or not the mandies will be fired, no way around that. Though, obviously if we are told why they were fired it would beneficial. I don't think we should have too many mandatories though.
Why didn't the Libertarian cross the road?
As for the tree question, I think it speaks of a persons personality, I personally think it makes a sound. The cat thing is very interesting but mind boggling. It looks like we will at least clear shadows this round if everyone votes as they say they are. Did anyone notice the "i" in the physc question. I think we should be paying close attention to the differences between peoples writting styles in round 0 and now that the boss knows that they are the boss. Some clever people do try to trick the employees, it's maybe just something we should look into.

Actually, living in the southern hemisphere explains why you're in spring while most of us are in fall (excepting GA and Hadleigh who, I believe, are also enjoying spring; and I'm not entirely sure what season it is where Krishnan lives...). It's the fact that you're in the eastern hemisphere that has the time differential. Still, you're within 2 or 3 hours of Krishnan and PsychoMikey, so you're not totally isolated in time....

I believe we have 7 votes for Shadows. We need 8 votes for a majority, but 10 would be better (if both the boss and rat say they've voted but haven't, then we need 10).
As long as Shadows doesn't declare a vote for herself, we don't need to worry about Boss's vote. (If we have a firing majority declared and Shadows is Boss, then she'll be fired; if we have a firing majority and Boss is among the voters, then we still know Shadows is cleared). 9 declared votes in this situation would clear Shadows provided she doesn't vote for herself. Hope that made sense.Of course that's really a moot point if Shadows doesn't get 9 votes. Just to avoid any confusion in the future, I am currently a student in the US midwest. It does get pretty cold here, unlike in Chennai, so unfortunately, you cannot easily clear me from the psych answer. But if you do try to clear me, you will be wasting a round since I am neither boss nor rat.
So... How many votes do we have for Shadows now? Can some count them up? I can't because I'm off to bed... Good night.

I don't know how useful this is but I found the following.
'There is a harmony in autumn, and a lustre in its sky' is a quote by P. B. Shelley (whose poetry I had read before).
'Autumn, the year's last, loveliest smile' is a quote by William C. Bryant (who I hadn't heard of).
Another thing, GA has posted a psych question, but I am not sure if it GA's responsibility or froggy's to post the psych question for our boss. It would be fun if the boss has to post the psych question for themselves.

krishnan, it is my responsibility as Humpty Dumpty to post a Psyche Question. My privileges of being Humpty Dumpty is that I can reward immunity to one player and make up the Psyche Question for the next round. Then someone else is entitled Humpty Dumpty and they get the privileges I had.
8 votes on Shadows is a rat proof majority, yes? 7-6 votes among the employees. Yes.
So I don't think we need anymore people jumping ship, but definitely do not leave the majority for anyone in it. We'll catch or clear Shadows.

The person whom Humpty Dumpty protects is allowed to ask the Boss a psych question for the next round. If this person does NOT submit a question by the end of voting, I will ask a question instead.

I sort of doubt in round one that the rat would vote for the boss... nothing to gain, especially in this situation where there definately is a majority vote. The rat's only out is to say they voted for the boss and then does not hack the system... ok, one person fired. I never think a single person firing when so many are voting for the boss confirms a clearing.
I think we are fine where we are... if shadows is the boss, then I also suspect that the rat is one of the other two people voting for me (the next majority). However, if Shadows is the boss, she really can not fire anyone. If she does, it sends up a big smoke signal on how the boss slipped by the clear majority.
However, never forget there are people who forget to confirm their vote (hint... you should all do that and make sure you have a little dot in the person you said you voted for). Nothing worse than having one or two people who said they voted for someone and it is found they did not. I call this the Boss win factor... because most bosses who win because of a miss vote should have been caught if the players were actually playing the game.

Once again, I'm very sorry; this has been an absolutely hectic week as midterms approach on top of everything else...
Based on my initial post, krishnan is correct: the person whom Humpty Dumpty protects is allowed to ask a psych question. For this round, that would be froggygg. Since it is quite late in the round, I will allow froggy the remainder of the voting period to submit a question; if she likes, she may simply request to use GA's question. Also, I think I will ask that the questions be PM'ed to me in the future instead, so that they are not discussed in the current round so the Boss can easily 'copy-paste' if he or she agrees with the idea, and actually encourage a personal response.
Therefore, froggy, please feel free to PM me a new question if you like, or if you have any questions about what's going on.
Thanks again to everyone for all your cooperation. I hope logistical flaws aside, the game has been fairly enjoyable thus far.

Gee Tanonpole, thanks for the educational geography lesson, needless to say I dropped geography as soon as I could, all I know is that I'm in a completely different time zone.
I don't know exactly why, but I get the feeling that the boss is female and very philosophical, maybe still in college?

Aw, I liked my question.
4demo, didn't you need to submit the question before voting ended, anyway?

I Googled "autumn quotes" and looked at the top few sites that popped up. None of them had both of the quotes in the psych answer. I'm guessing the Boss knows these quotes, but don't quote me on that. (I'm sorry about the horrible pun.)
I guess the boss wasn't Shadows.

Doesn't look like it, no.
It's good we know that, though, one less boss. She could still be the rat, but I think since it's more likely that she's not, she would be the best choice to pardon next round.

Giving the boss some hints, now are we, LR? Would you like some cheese, no?
Yes please, Mozzarella.
I'm trying to give the next Humpty hints, not the boss. Unless Shadow's rat I don't see how that could be a bad idea, but it doesn't matter too much. If she was pardoned she could help join majorities rather than having to stay out of them so we can keep a cleared player, but as long as the next Humpty doesn't pick the boss/rat, I think we'll be fine.

LR, I'm pretty sure you can just outright say you suggest Shadows receives immunity... I don't think there's a rule against it.

Not true at all, but like I said before, I have no problem being voted for in a majority as I am not the boss or the rat. When you vote someone into a majority... they do basically have immunity for that round. The boss can only fire from the lemmons of the majority vote. So although it wasn't an immunity given to her by the mod, Shadows was given a type of immunity by the functionality of the game. This is not wolf - the person getting the most votes is safe at tribal council - so to speak - unless that person is the boss!

I wouldn't say Shadows was immune because of the majority any more than I was. Unless the majority's on the boss, those outside of the majority won't be fired. But this method won't help us win the game. That's why the immunity set up in this game is quite different from staying out of majorities.

Is anybody from a country/state/province that doesn't really have a fall? That might explain the lack of festivals. Each year it seems that fall is getting shorter. At least to me.
Or I can just stay out of the majority next round, and someone else gets the immunity. We have plenty of active players.
Personally, I don't think fall is something to celebrate. It's pretty, yes, and farmers harvest their crops (even though it's kind of wet this year), but then what? Then it snows in October/November and doesn't go away until April/May. To me, spring is a cause for celebration.

RGW4, you keep on saying "lemmons". Is that deliberate, or do you think it's called "lemmons"? I saw it in your post earlier, but didn't say anything... but since you've said it again instead of "lemmings" I just thought I'd bring it up...

Caberet, CONGRATS!!!!!!!! You must be very proud!
We don't have fall in RSA, we have Autumn, but I'm 30 and have never seen snow before. Where I stay on the east coast of South Africa we don't even need to wear jerseys in winter time. We are currently in spring and it's a sweltering 34 degrees Celcius today.
I'm not sure if it's 4demo or omaha that are holding things up but if we are stuck on who to vote for perhaps we should try for a majority on Omaha next round.

Sorry but I really should not join these 2 day games. I seriously lack the desired patience. I will not vote next round. Yes, I am a mere employee. And for the 1st time ever, I will mandi out of a game. Good going Hadleigh. You win...

Well, sorry to see you go then, Cab. I wish you'd stay though, but it's your choice. I can see what you mean about the wait, but while I'm not so keen on it myself, I still like playing when it does have some action.

" " indeed. caberet, I think you should rethink you decision. It will really mess up next round.
Hopefully the boss chose to fire you out of the lemmings anyway. Maybe then you would get what you want without having to, well, resign yourself.
I also did not expect to be waiting this long in between rounds, but I am going away tomorrow, so I think I can count myself lucky as I may not get on every day, but I definitely will be able to get on every second day, so for me it's worked out quite perfectly.
Hadleigh, I have seen snow, yes driving down the Desert Road (which unfortunately I'm doing tomorrow ) but I have never touched snow. I want to, but I've never got the chance.
