In the United States Presidential election, Bob Smith ran against David Johnson. The voter-turnout was larger than it had been for many years, however, Smith won with only 300 votes. How could such a low number be enough to grant him Presidency?
Answer
Presidents, in the United States, are not elected by the popular vote, but by the Electoral College. A candidate needs to receive a simple majority of the total votes to be elected. Each state has votes in the Electoral College. The number of votes depends on the number of Senators and Representatives of the state.Bob Smith received 300 votes in the Electoral College, which was a majority, granting him Presidency.
