To nothing add ten, with three-fifths of two score,
And let them be joined by five hundred more.
These, rightly conjoined, will give you the name
Of a city that's high in the annals of fame.

Answer:

OXFORD.

O-X-FOR-D
FOR is three-fifths of the word FORTY, or "two score" - that is, three-fifths of the total letters in the word.

I don't think I would have ever figured this one out. Roman numerals just don't come to mind as a rule. Great riddle and you sure got me. Thanks for posting. :o

I got 10 + 24 (3/5 x 40) + 500 = 534, which didn't ring any bells.

 GOOD.. I got it a different way O-X-XXIV-D..which 'rightly conjoined' can give you O-XXX-FOUR-D = OXFORD :D

Much too tough for me, but I did enjoy the struggle. :D

Posted by nikitafullmoon03/18/08
Really good! It needs a hint, though.

I was with craniac; I got the total 534, and unlike many others I DID think of Roman numerals, but DXXXIV didn't say anything!! You mixed Roman and the WORD FORTY, and THAT I couldn't have thought of!!!

Posted by clearisacolour03/18/08
a hint would have been helpful and much needed.

Oxford is also a shoe!
