Brain Teasers
Two Part Challenge
I had a lot of fun putting together the following list of words. Can you figure out the rule I used to develop the list? Once you do, have fun creating your own list!
mount, right, left, roll, mote, lick,
lass, over, rate, aunt, rill, arch,
oral, ever, pine, rice, tip, each,
team, rash, sage, ouch, edge, ray,
earn, any

Hint
The order matters. Count the words.Answer
Each 3 to 5 letter word, when preceded by sequential letters of the alphabet, will form new words:amount, bright, cleft, droll, emote, flick,
glass, hover, irate, jaunt, krill, larch,
moral, never, opine, price, q-tip, reach,
steam, trash, usage, vouch, wedge, x-ray,

This is really good, had me stumped. One of the best.
Great teaser, had to have a good hard look at it and got it eventually.
I had to use the hint, but I got it. Good job!
Yup, really good, that's bright
excuse me... q-tip? shld that b excused becus there are very little words beginning with Q?
You shouldnt have used the -. If you really wanted a q word you should have made it Qtip.
Good one!
this is one of those teasers where the hint was really helpful...i didn't really like the teaser, but it was creative and easy...thumbs up
One of the few good ones I've seen. In other words, excellent
very cute!!
What is a Qtip?
Very tough. I needed the hint and even then took awhile to get it. Anyone come up with another choice for Q?
Great teaser! By the way Flipper, a Q-tip is a brand name for cotton swabs, the things we use to clean our ears. I think Q-tip may be the only Q word that words since all the english words I can find that start with Q have vowels for the 2nd and 3rd letters and non of the words that start with U have a vowel as the 2nd letter. Maybe someone has a better dictionary than I do and can find one that I missed.
NOT BAD..IT WAS THE FIRST ONE I HAD A CHANCE TO READ..NICE JOB
Great teaser! I didn't get it, but once I read the answer I banged my head against the wall bcuz it should have been obvious! I have to go ice my brain. Thanks a lot. LOL.
I am so confused...good job!
Good one. But wouldn't any Q word have worked here? Am I missing something?
Codammanus, any Q word wouldn't work because the remaining letters once the Q is removed has to be a word also. That was the trick of this teaser.
Don't know about about cotton swabs but on the end of a billiard cue is a cue-tip. Good puzzle - what else can you do with a Q?(lol)
I finally got a teaser in the top 100 hardest right! W00t!
Anyway, the teaser was great. I loved it.
Anyway, the teaser was great. I loved it.
A word that works for q is Qat. I have no clue what it means, but it is a real word
this is boreing
Genuis!
very hard, but pure genius!
I think qat is a type of bush or plant. Anyways, the teaser was very clever, except that there is another similar one (called moral friend), which made this one easier to guess. I'm impressed that you came up with words for every letter.
Very clever, loved it.
26th COMMENT! Good teaser.
Briliant concept. I love a good chalenge but, it sure took me a while. Somehow i thought of counting the words, before i read the hint where you underlined the fact that order matters. I was thriled when I managed to finaly solve it, as i really had fun trying my hand at this one. Keep them coming!
Very original and I got it right, but then doubted myself when I saw two letters added to rate. That threw me off and made me think I was wrong when I was right. Rather good though and I like the suggestion to create your own, a double gift in a way. Thanks!
and from which language does the word QTIP derive? certainly not english, that is for sure!
aid -> qaid

Good one, enjoyed it very much. Had to try many different things before I figured it out.
Thanx

Obviously easy...but good.
I didn't think it was obviously easy at all! Excellent!!
Also a Q word: Qi (It's in the two letter Scrabble dictionary that comes with the game.). Obviously, the original word is I.
Great teaser. Not super easy at all. I really struggled and in the end had to look to figure out the answer.
Excellent teaser. Totally stumped me, but when I saw the answer I was ready to kick myself for not getting it. That's an excellent brain teaser by my way of thinking.
By the way, though I don't have a problem with Q-tip, I would have used at=Qat for the Q word. It's a variation of Kat or Khat, which is a plant that is chewed like tobacco or steeped as a tea in the middle east for it's stimulating properties. I only know this because I found it as a great way to get rid of a lingering Q in scrabble

I really liked this teaser. I didn't get it, but was intrigued enough to keep trying to figure it out. Had a good brain workout before I finally gave in and looked at the answer.
Excellent teaser! Well done clever I'll try one on my own later - when I have LOTS of time! Thanks for a good one!
Decent,But the hint made it easy
BU TAI NAN!
NOT TOO DIFFICULT!
THE CATEGORY WAS A GIVE AWAY, BUT I THINK THAT THIS IS A GOOD WAY TO ENTERTAIN THE KIDS ON A RAINY DAY OR ON A LONG RIDE.
THANKS FOR THE IDEA.

stupid quizz..hate those kindo teasers
Good Challenge. It's a very interesting teaser.
very clever
One of the best I've seen. Come on people, let go of the Qtip thing. It's even in the dictionary. Try cleaning out your ears sometime if you don't know what a Qtip is. I think that is a better known word than Qad or Qaid.
By the way, Murray, "Entertain the kids on a rainy day?" come on. I want to meet your kids then.

Really great teaser, from the hint i figured itd be something to do with the alphabet but i didnt get it.. Was very impressed when i looked at the answer. Excellent teaser
You got me ! Should have followed the hint instead of giving up so quickly.
I would have maybe done better if I looked at the hint... Good one!
Very very good.. figured out it had something to do with the alphabet once I saw the hint but that was it for my brain.. Anyway, great teaser!! Thanks!
great teaser! i didn't get it.
Q-Tip is a brand not a word sorry to throw a wrench in your plan. Perhaps if you would have used qi or qat it would have went over better
neverwoud have gotten it with out the hint. great idea.
hey jacstop, do you even know what those words mean???

WOW! Very hard! The hint made sense after I peeked at the answer Spent some time on it , and had no clue GOOD ONE "GIZZER"
that was so fun!
u did an awesome job on this!
u did an awesome job on this!
Qi or Qat wouldn't have left a 3-5 letter word...what about Qbert? Anybody remember the video game?
nice one. I knew it had somethin to do with alphabets. At first i thought the synonyms need to start with the letters.. after a hard look i pre-appended the letters and got em !

I loved this one. Had the ole grey matter working. Thanks so much for the post.
Monday~
Monday~
Very good! I only got it because I looked at the hint. Clever.
Very clever, I enjoyed this teaser a lot.
I didn't get it, but I haven't been on for a while and besides, I 'm not very smart...
That was a toughy!
what?
Awwwww.... I had no clue, and gave up too quickly. The hint helped me think I had a chance, knowing there was something to do with the alphabet... but I didn't get it. Oh well, better luck next teaser!
Excellent teaser! Congrats on having the highest rated teaser in 'Series".
Great teaser!
It was so good and so clever I didn't remember seeing it before - but I commented on it in 2007
Thanks for a good one!

An old goodie revived.
Wow - that was hard. This has no business being the teaser on a Monday morning
I don't get it. someone help?
Good one. I had to use the hint and then it was really easy.
Had to look at the hint and still didn't get it. Great teaser!
Vasha - There are 26 words in the list. Add "A" to the beginning of the first word in the list, "B" to the second word, "C" to the third word, "D" to the fourth word, etc., until you get to the end, where you add "Z" to beginning of the 26th word.
sorry - maybe that's "yash"?
did you mean Harsh?
Well, I guess this is basic to some part of speech, or English grammar, or Spelling, yes perhaps Spelling. I found this Teaser difficult. The Explanation is always difficult, it says one thing but seems to mean something entirely different. I loved this teaser. It keeps you learning, laughing and lingering in Language concepts.

QASIDA... cant rememebr what it means but it was on a website for unusual words that start with Q and Asida is a arabian food.. phew..
Qasida- form of Poetry from Pre islamic Arabia.. Common term i use every day...lol..
Not one of my favorites.
It WAS one of my favorites. I like most word quizzes. Thanks for a good one!
I loved this puzzle, as I do most word puzzles and word games. While it is correct that not any Q word would hve worked, all avid Scrabble players are familiar with the 33 words that have a Q but no U. Ones that would work for this puzzle:
QAID (a Muslim tribal chief or senior official)
QUAIDS (plural of QAID)
QAT (leaf of the shrub Catha edulis)
QI (a circulating life energy in Chinese philosophy)
QIS (plural of QI)

Easy- Because I've seen this before. But still one of the best teasers.
I had to give up, but I still think it is a fun, very clever, teaser~~ Nice work!!
I thank everyone who took the time to tell me that they enjoyed the teaser. Some have suggested Q words other than Q-tip. That's fine - qaid is another word that would fit the "rule", since aid has 3-5 letters. You can put that word in your list. Perhaps we can finally move on, and make suggestions for alternatives for the other 25 letters, instead of fixating on just the Q. Thanks again!
Still a challenge! Thanks for posting!
Terrific, wonderful, creative, and challenging puzzle.
One of the best examples of the best of Braingle.
Click on "Gizzer".
You get - "member no longer exists"
What a sadness. What a shame.
Did she get "axed" for some editorial brouhaha?
Maybe somebody here knows???
My Dad (the original "BadBunnee") had a great relationship with "Giz".
Maybe that was the cause of her "demise".

Cool teaser!
I'm shocked at the difficulty rating. Anything over 3.00 is generally unheard of, and I've found some others much more difficult with a much lower rating. Maybe just me.
Anyway, still a good teaser, not too easy but not too hard.
