Brain Teasers
The King History Forgot
Who was this ruler of bygone ages?
Who was this monarch of old?
Why is he absent from history's pages?
Why of him is so little told?
His little daughter had music skill.
He was a man of jolly mirth;
His amphitheater topped a hill,
But we'd know little of his worth,
Except...!
Someone wrote a bit of rhyme
That gave him immortality.
His name is said now throughout time,
In lines known well to you and me.

Pipe and bowlAnswer
"Old King Cole was a merry old soul,And a merry old soul was he.
He called for his pipe,
And he called for his bowl,
And he called for his fiddlers three."
King Cole was a ruler in the British Isles in the third century. According to some writings, he built the city of Colchester, which means "Cole's stronghold". Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote in the twelfth century that his daughter was a skilled musician. Other writings claim she was the mother of Constantine the Great; however, there is no firm basis for that story.
