Brain Teasers
Dead Numeral
Trick
Trick brain teasers appear difficult at first, but they have a trick that makes them really easy.Trick
If only DEAD people understand hexadecimal, how many people understand hexadecimal?
Hint
The question isn't asking what it seems to be asking.Hexadecimal should be quite a big hint.
Answer
Only 57005 (Base 10), which is DEAD (Base 16), people would understand hexadecimal.DEAD=
(13*16^3)+(14*16^2)+(10*16^1)+(13*16^0)=
53248+3584+160+13=
57005

does this make sense???
Yes, but you gotta be one of those who understand Hex. It took me a while and I kinda had to cheat and look up my conversion tables.
It's like the old joke: There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't!
Superleaf1: No, it doesn't.
Im not good with that... and personally, it should be in the math category if it wasn't for the little play on words in the beginning... BTW, First comment by me ever feel special
And look at 57005 upside-down, it's the closest you can get to "souls" uusing numbers.
This went completely over my head. I feel very stupid!
this teaser is halfway between the math section and the trick section.
It's a trick that requires a certain knowledge of math to get the trick.
It totally stumped me, but this teaser doesn't deserve such a low rating just because you can't get it. There's a balance of teasers on Braingle, some easy, some hard.
And I thought all trick questions are fun. This one proves me wrong.
Well, it's because this is also part math. And you also require knowledge of hex.
I did not get it and i zoned out on the answer and the hint
Yeah not so fond of this math stuff
Definitely a trick question... And the best one I've seen for a while! Congrats!
I feel that this should be in Maths... I thought the answer was all dead people...
It is a tough call on where it belongs. It does sort of straddle the two categories. Wasn't that hard, but then I understand Hex.
Good teaser.
Good teaser.
I did not get it but I realised that DEAD is a number.
My original guess was : No one.
My original guess was : No one.
Wait, what?
Isn't this math??
Well I'll tell you one thing. I definitely don't understand it, so will somebody please explain the answer to me??????
what. seriosly emoticons rule
This comment is for those who don't understand hexadecimal.
We normally work in base 10, so we need 10 symbols, represented by 0 to 9.
In base 16, we need 16 symbols. We could come up with 6 new symbols, but for ease we just use letters. So the 16 symbols are 0 to 9 and A, B, C, D, E, F.
"A" has the value 10, "B" has the value 11, "C"=12, "D"=13, "E"=14, "F"=15.
In base 10, there is a 1's digit (10^0), a 10's digit (10^1), a 100's digit (10^2), ...
In base 16, there is a 1's digit (16^0), a 16's digit (16^1), a 256's digit (16^2), ...
So DEAD in hexadecimal is (D*16^3)+(E*16^2)+(A*16^1)+(D*16^0).
Now look at the answer.
