Arrange 25 five letter words in a 5 by 5 grid. The five words in each row and each column and each diagonal share a common letter. There are 12 different common letters. The grid cells are identified by row (1 to 5, top to bottom) and column (1 to 5, left to right). Example: Cell 3.2 identifies Row 3 Column 2.

The words are: aisle, azoic, brief, bring, bylaw, cargo, cozen, ducat, forth, frank, froze, fudge, ghost, glitz, habit, hound, moral, nasty, nomad, plaid, scrub, sharp, smock, swift, zilch.

Row 5: f r o w e

Answer:

moral bylaw glitz aisle plaid
sharp habit zilch ghost hound
forth brief froze swift fudge

Common Letters
Rows 1 to 5: c, n, l, h, f
Columns 1 to 5: r, b, z, s, d
Diagonals 1 and 2: g, t

1) Cell 2.4 contains "y", so it must be either "bylaw" or "nasty". Cell 5.4 contains "w". If it were "bylaw", then Cell 5.4 would have to be "swift". The only common letter would be "w", and there are no other words with "w". Cell 2.4 is "nasty". Cell 2.1 contains "k", so it must be either "frank" or "smock". If it were "smock", then the words in Row 2 would have to share "s". The only word that could fit in Cell 2.5 would also be "smock". Cell 2.1 is "frank".
2) Cell 5.4 contains "w", so it must be either "bylaw" or "swift". If it were "bylaw, then Cell 5.1 would have to be "brief", the words in Row 5 would have to share "b", and Cell 5.5 would also have to be "brief". Cell 5.4 is "swift".
3) The word in Cell 4.4 must have "g" and either "s" or "t". If it were "glitz", then Cell 4.1 would have to be "plaid" and the words in Row 4 would have to share either "i" or "l". There is no word that could fit in Cell 4.5. Cell 4.4 is "ghost". Cell 4.1 can not be "plaid", as it does not share a letter with "ghost". Cell 4.1 is "sharp". The word in Cell 4.3 must have "z" and either "h" or "s". Cell 4.3 is "zilch". The words in Row 4 must share "h". The word in Cell 4.5 must have "u" and "h". Cell 4.5 is "hound".
4) Cell 5.1 is "forth", since that is the only word that has "f" and shares a letter with "nasty". The words in Diagonal 2 must share "t". The words in Column 1 must share "r". The words in Row 5 must share "f", since "t" has already been assigned. The words in Column 4 must share "s", also because "t" has already been assigned.
5) Cell 3.4 is "aisle", since that is the only word with "l" and "s". Cell 4.2 is "habit", since that is the only word with "h" and "t".
6) Cell 1.5 is "ducat", since that is the only word with "d" and "t". Cell 3.3 is "glitz".
7) Cell 5.3 is "froze" ("o" and "f"). Cell 5.2 is "brief" ("r" and "f"). Cell 5.5 is "fudge" ("e" and "f").
8) The words in Column 3 must share "z". Cell 1.3 is "azoic" ("i" and "z"). Cell 2.3 is "cozen" ("c" and "z").
9) Cell 1.4 is "smock" ("o" and "s"). The words in Row 1 must share "c". Cell 1.1 is "cargo" ("a" and "c"). Cell 1.2 is "scrub" ("s" and "c").
10) The words in Diagonal 1 must share "g". Cell 2.2 is "bring" ("n" and "g").
11) The words in Row 2 must share "n". Cell 2.5 is "nomad" ("m" and "n").
12) The words in Column 5 must share "d". Cell 3.5 is "plaid" ("i" and "d").
13) The words in Column 2 must share "b". Cell 3.2 is "bylaw".
14) The words in Row 3 must share "l". Cell 3.1 is "moral".
