Against my grip
you may resist
But in the end
you will desist

Turning upright
into level
Calming you but
not forever

Love or hate me
I'm undeterred
'Cause in the end
I'll have my third

What am I?

lines 1-4: Eventually one must succumb to the need for sleep despite any efforts to fight against it.

lines 5-8: Sleep forces one to go from being "upright" (standing) to "level" (horizontal). Sleep makes you (relatively) still, or has a "calming" effect on you temporarily.

lines 9-12: It is estimated that through the average person's lifetime, around one third of it is spent in sleep.
