Hidden Time & Again II
Language brain teasers are those that involve the English language. You need to think about and manipulate words and letters.Inside each set of the following words, there are a pair of smaller words. By putting & between them, lo & behold, you'll make a familiar phrase. For example, "Thighbone/Swallowtail" conceals "High & Low."
1. Gulliver/Clearness
2. Tragicomedy/Pentagon
3. Chinchilla/Magdalene
4. Terrestrial/Ecoterrorist
5. Thundershower/Intellectual

Posted by soccer_chick70 on Jul 23, 2005 here were my very wrong answers: #1: Liver & Ear (thought it had a body part thing going on) #2: Rag & Tag (well they rhymed!) #3: Chip & Dale (the only thing I could think of was that there was some spelling error... gosh I feel stupid) #4: Rest & Terror (hey they're opposites, right?) and I got #5 right... VERY surprised I did so bad, especially considering how well I did on the first one of these! GREAT teaser but maybe I need to get some glasses... either that or a new brain! |

Posted by realm2346 on Oct 30, 2005 Here were my answers: 1.Live & Learn 2.Rag & Tag(smack) 3.Hill and Dale 4.Trial & Error 5.Show & Tell It took a while to get #3, and then when I saw the word "hill", I thought of a song I learned in fifth grade(and I just graduated last year). The song goes... Over hill, Over dale, as we march the dusty trail, as the cannons go marching along."(that's how it begins, anyway, and I could go go through the whole song now that I remember it). ....and in all fairness to soccer chick ,I did the same thing on a very different language teaser, but the words were still hidden(but in sentences). I was like ..#1 could also be Rice ,cream, kale...#2 could also be .....Well, you get the idea. For anyone who doesn't know, k-a-l-e is a cabbagelike vegetable which is often used as a garnish(although it is edibible, I don't recommend trying it.....I am speaking from experience here). P.S.- I still haven't looked up c-a-l-e yet. Anyway, I did the first teaser, and I got all of them right. I really like these teasers. Also, in all fairness to soccer chick, at least those words were also found within the phrases, much like my mistakes in the other teaser. If it's there, it might just be valid(just a philosophy). |
Posted by realm2346 on Oct 30, 2005 ...except for #3, but it's pretty hard if you've never heard of the words......I don't know why I thought #2 was Rag & Tag, because none of the other answers rhyme.....Think I've been looking at too many rebuses and riddles lately...Just kidding...I LOVE riddles. |

Posted by marschie on Jul 25, 2006 I thought I got them all AND found a mistake: for 2 I had "come and gone" and THERE IS NO 'E' AT THE END OF PENTAGONE! Silly me, the phrase is come and go! |
Posted by starnz on Jul 25, 2006 Really enjoy these! Thanks! Keep 'em coming! |
Posted by Badger on Jul 25, 2006 Easy & Fun. Interesting, though, I can whip through the answers quickly but when I'm done I wouldn't be able to tell you a single one of the original words! I never "saw" them. Like one of those pictures where you relax your eyes and the hidden picture just appears. Kinda cool. Also looks like a little bit of generation gap on some of the phrases. My kids couldn't get "rough & tumble" on your last teaser. Never heard of it! "Hill & dale" this time. So, kids, don't feel bad bad if you missed those. Just means you're not an old dude like me! Sorry I went long... Great teaser... Keep 'em comin'! |
Posted by feste on Jul 25, 2006 Took me about two minutes to work this one out. I guess being a geezer helps. |
Posted by FeaerFactorY666 on Jul 25, 2006 Nice! |
Posted by shawneeo on Jul 25, 2006 I got em all, I got em all!!! yayyyy!!! Dont kids learn those corny American folksongs anymore, in elementary school? The person above was right about the "hill and dale" song, but they got the lyrics different, or wrong, than I learned them. Over hill, over dale We will hit The dusty trail! As those cations(sp?) Keep rolling along. For its "Hi Hi Hee" On the field artillery, Call out Your numbers loud and strong! And wherever we go You will always know That those cashuns, Are rolling along! Yes, those cayshuns Keep rolling along! I forget what "cayshuns" are, but Im pretty sure thats the right word, altho Im sure the sp. is wrong. But, the "Hill and Dale" is what's important here, I'm just overdoing it because I actually remember something! Good teaser, thanks! |
Posted by Qrystal on Jul 25, 2006 I think we shouldn't be beating ourselves up for choosing "Rag & Tag" for #2, because it IS a legit pair of words that can be joined with an '&'. When I saw them, I stopped looking, as I'm sure many of the rest of you did. "Come & Go" is good though too... Can the puzzle be modified to include the user-found alternate answers? ;) |
Posted by shawneeo on Jul 25, 2006 OK, I shoulda looked it up first, coz I got as much wrong as the other person! Sorry if u dont care, but heres the whole song, "the Cassion Song" Over hill, over dale As we hit the dusty trail, And those caissons go rolling along. In and out, hear them shout, Counter march and right about, And those caissons go rolling along. Refrain: Then it's hi! hi! hee! In the field artillery, Shout out your numbers loud and strong, For where e'er you go, You will always know That those caissons go rolling along. In the storm, in the night, Action left or action right See those caissons go rolling along Limber front, limber rear, Prepare to mount your cannoneer And those caissons go rolling along. Refrain: Was it high, was it low, Where the hell did that one go? As those caissons go rolling along Was it left, was it right, Now we won't get home tonight And those caissons go rolling along. Refrain caissons are either things that caskets are carried on, like a wagon type deal, or a wagon kinda thing that pulls a cannon or other big guns. Hill is a hill, and "Dale" is a valley. |
Posted by bradon182001 on Jul 25, 2006 This was fun. I'd like to see more of these. |
Posted by coachpisco on Jul 25, 2006 A caisson, is pulled behind the wagon that pulls the cannon. It has the powder, tools and cannon balls inside it. Very good teaser. I enjoyed it. |
Posted by RRAMMOHAN on Jul 25, 2006 Pretty clever, nice and quite easy! |

Posted by speedqueenkmw on Jul 25, 2006 absolutely love these! Probably cuz I can get them |
Posted by thirtysixbelow on Jul 25, 2006 1. live and learn 2. rag and tag 3. chill and dale??? 4. trial and error 5. show and tell was having a little trouble until i realized they were not anagrams and that the words were not scrambled. |
Posted by rhmaustin on Jul 25, 2006 The comments are very amusing today. Glad we got the Caisson Song business straightened out. |
Posted by Neek on Jul 25, 2006 I got them all but #4 too. Thanks to those who gave the explanation. I learned something! |

Posted by c_rae on Jul 25, 2006 This was great! Very clever! I will go look for your other ones; this is definitely one of my faves! Do you ever have anything nice to say Imurray? You know there is an old saying about that...If you don't have anything good to say, well, I'm sure you know the rest! |

Posted by scallio on Jul 25, 2006 These teasers are a bit too easy. I got the same answers as FishMed. Gotta say I enjoyed the song lyrics though. Have heard the song, but didn't really know the lyrics so I sang a hearty round! |
Posted by POPS on Jul 25, 2006 Great teaser, only missed on NO3, Thought it might be Chip and Dale |
Posted by syracuse945 on Jul 25, 2006 haha, nys... very clever... i, 2, thot 1 of m was "chip & dale"... i 4got about shakespeare... o well... def 1 of my faves... |
Posted by jcann on Jul 25, 2006 I got them all again--not quite as quickly as I did with the last one. But I really, really like these. It makes me feel good to exercise my brain without having to give up in the end. |
Posted by Musikman212 on Jul 25, 2006 The instructions said ,"Two word that form a commonn phrase, with & between them." Rag & tag is not a common phrase. Rag tag is, but it doesn't have the & between. In short, all you people who think that was a good alternate answer are wrong. Sorry. GREAT TEASER. Why people can't just accept that they didn't get an answer, is beyond me. |
Posted by patm on Jul 25, 2006 thanks these were easy To those who do not know what a "dale" is, try adding crossword puzzles to your brain teasers--it is frequently an answer to "clearing in a valley", along with vale, dell, and glen. |
Posted by somnambulist on Jul 25, 2006 I loved this teaser, I got all of them but #3. I got dale, and I know what it is...for sure, I think this particular teaser reveals a generational gap....I've never heard this "over hill, over dale" song...but I confess a little disappointment at discovering Dale's companion in this teaser was not Chip.... |

Posted by JLP1 on Jul 28, 2009 I love these, thank you! |
Posted by Babe on Jul 25, 2012 Another good one! I thought they were easy, but I am older than all of you and that is the reason I know them all. They are oldies, but goodies, and for all, of you singing the hill and dale song here is a bit of information. During World War Two the song was sung by soldiers serving in the military. I think it was the Army's song. You are welcome!!! |
Posted by quads84 on Jul 25, 2012 Looking through the comments, I felt a lot better about getting rag & tag for #2. Got all the others right, though! However, not without some difficulty. I found "inch" in #3, "rest" in #4, & "under" in #5 and looked for something that went with it. When I couldn't find anything but suddenly found a word in the second word, I had to go back to the first word to find the pair. I'm also surprised at how many people don't know hill & dale (and think that they're people). They're types of landscape. I guess we all have our weaknesses. |
Posted by gaylewolf on Jul 25, 2012 Good teaser. I got them all and loved the comments! Thanks! |
Posted by gaylewolf on Jul 25, 2012 That BLUSH should be a wink! |
Posted by iggy39 on Jul 25, 2012 fun but really easy, enjoyed it. |
Posted by giuseppemccarth on Jul 25, 2012 Fun One! If you didn't have to add '&' then #2 could also be "Rag-Tag" |
Posted by JQPublic on Jul 25, 2012 Only 1/5. |
