Brain Teasers
At What Intervals?
Anderson, working in his garden, looked up and saw his neighbor Brown chopping down a tree 1,100 feet away. Brown struck the tree once every second. How much time elapsed between the two strokes of Brown's axe, as the sound reached Anderson? We all know, of course, that sound travels at the rate of 1,100 feet per second.
Answer
One second. It would take longer for the sound of the woodcutting to begin to reach Anderson, but the time lapses between the strokes would not be affected---they would still be one second apart.Hide Answer Show Answer
