Are recruits privates or are they recruits?
recruit isn't a rank
A recruit is just a recruit--You aren't a private until you're in the army, and that is official only at the completion of basic training, when of course you are no longer a recruit. Still, it's a good teaser.
In British Armed Forces, you are classed as a Private from when you are attested - that is sworn allegiance to Queen and Country. This can be long before you complete basic training.
