Brain Teasers
Marathon Madness
Bob Lowry was going to compete in a marathon. He called the number he heard on the radio and signed up with his 2 friends. He started running and was doing a good job, but 1/3 of the way through, he stopped and did not continue running for the duration of the race. However, his name appeared as one of the top runners in the newspaper the next day. How did he do that?
He did not take a shortcut or cheat in any way.
Hundreds of people finished the race.

It's good for all of the Tracksters out there
His competitors were all 80 year old seniors.
keep up the nice work!

or he stopped then walked, or nobody else got past him
or he stopped then walked, or nobody else got past him
sorry, didnt meen to double post
Dude, since you said he stopped a third through i thought it was obvious he was in a triathlon lol
Yeah, I also thought it was a triatholon and that for some reason he was the best at the first half, even though he quit the rest of it, lol.
Did not have a clue. I thought it may have been a tri-athelon, where you run , bike, and swim. Had me stumped, so I guess that shows I'm not a runner. Very good teaser.
A no brainer. Took all of five seconds to come up w/answer.
nice

too easy!!
I never heard of a marathon relay.
I didn't even come close. But, that was a good one! I liked some of the other answers, too.
NICE!!!
Easy to figure out. Nice teaser. Thanks for posting.
I guessed that it was a triathlon...it makes sense, right?
I came up with the same answer as rschwietzer.
There was another Bob Lowry entered in the race.
There was another Bob Lowry entered in the race.
That was awesome.
I'm proud of myself because I actually figured that one out!
i think i overlooked few areas..." the question mentioned bob lowry as top runner and not winner... it was never mentioned that he won the marathon.... so i came up with a conclusion that he must be a lengendary runner who came there as a guest role and ran for 1/3 of the distance for initiating public awarness reagrding marathon...
do we actually have marathon relays??
Very easy for me.
I first came with the "same name, different person" answer but thought that was too easy so then began to over think it, but all I could come up with were ways to cheat and knew that couldn't be it since he did not cheat was stipulated in the question. I completely missed the relay angle. Good one!
Not sure how, but I thought of relay rather quickly. Good quiz - thanks for posting! Happy Holidays, friends!
Hello Cutebug - how do I know you?
I miss doehead. I would have loved to hear his answer.
By the way, I didn't get it....again.
They say the memory is the first thing to go.

Bob got his runner's number mixed up with one of his two buddies, and one of his buddies did really well.
Know what I mean?
Bob wore Friend 1's 1234, and Friend 1 wore Bob's 4321. Then when Friend 1 finishes, Bob gets the credit.

ho hum for me. Sorry!
Not being a runner (since grade school anyway) and having no interest in marathons, I was not surprised that I had no clue about this teaser.
This time I got it with no trouble. Maybe the old brain is working today.
Made me think so I liked it. I might have said, "Bob signed up with his two friends, Bill and Don." That would have eliminated the "same name - different person" response (which I guessed too).
Definitely thought it was another dude with the same name.
Fun and easy teaser; enjoyed it though I got it right away.
I thought of the Olympics, and came up with the relay races. Didn't know they had marathon relay races, but it fit the story.
I didn't think of a relay.
The best I could do was this: his 2 friends plotted to run the 2nd and 3rd thirds of the race pretending to be Bob to gain an unfair advantage - they did this without telling him so he did not cheat, as specified. But although this is logically possible it makes no sense. What does this reveal about my brain?

Inverted numbers: Like 6 upside down looks like 9 or 66 looks like 99. So may be he had one of this number. Another guy had its inverted number which by mistake he put upside down. So the officials thought our man did great!
Fun and easy teaser; I got it right away again this time.
yeah I got this too
