Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
A man is accused of a misdemeanor, and goes to jail for ten days even though he is only sentenced for five. He has lousy care and isn't even fed every day. He is pretty much alone in jail, and is not repentant nor does he learn anything in jail. However, when he is released, he is happy to have been imprisoned. Why?
Answer
A volcano erupted by his town, killing everyone with its lava and gases, but in his windowless cell he was fine.Hide Answer Show Answer

I totally agree with Cod. There are an infinite number of reasons why he could be happy that you can't possibly come up with your "answer."
This one is by no means the worst on this category. Some answers are totally random. At least I could get the idea that he avoided something bad by being where he was. You either have to give more clues or a less specific answer.
"Totally Random" you coined the phrase that describes this whole category. It needs reform Jimbo, it needs reform I tell ya.
Please, if you don't like the category, just avoid it instead of insulting my puzzler. As it says in the introduction to the situation category, these teasers are best when one person tells a group, and then they ask questions about it. That is the nature of this type of puzzler, and I'm sorry if you don't enjoy it.
I hear you. I keep trying in hopes that they get better. When I think of Brain Teasers, I think they should be solvable on your own. That group thing defeats the purpose of gearing up YOUR brain for work. You have help.
Forget what the other people think! this is a great puzzle!
I agree. Every other teaser on this site can gear up your brain power. So why not have one category for group fun. Logic is almost exactly the same category as situation. If you dont like these go over there, no point bad mouthing something you dont like but alot of other people do.
I think this puzzle is good so just shut up Cod
how could anyone think of a volcano? it could be loads of other reasons and stuff.
this seems awfully familiar, but this is one of those real life events isnt it? well it was (the teaser)
How the heck are people supposed to figure that out? I mean really
I belive I have read about this before, but as a true story
it's a good one! but what about doors? and if there wasn't any holes for the lava to come in, how does he breathe?
I actually like this one!
This was probably based on real story of Ludger Sylbaris, a convict who was protected during the 1902 Mount Pelee eruption on Martinique by his underground solitary cell. Great teaser!

But how was he supposed to be released if lava killed everyone except him, which means he was left locked up alone without being able to reach the keys probably. How did he get out? did lava melt the cell oO? and he so lucky that the lava stopped right before his feet?
I read about this in my Atlas Obscura! The man was Ludger Sylbaris. He was one of the three survivors of the eruption, the other two being a shoemaker living in the very edge of the town and an adolescent girl who escaped on a rowboat. There was an extreme amount of heat and ash and he was severely injured, but he kept himself alive by treating the wounds with his own urine. Great story, very interesting.
I think you have to have heard the story to come to that exact answer, but Situation teasers can have multiple answers. That was just the given one.
Great teaser!
