well i assumed we weren't at the second millenium, but i'm fairly certain it should read that the second millenium started "on" january 1st 1001...

We don't know which millenium we are in, as we don't know exactly how old the planet is, but if dinosaurs were around millions of years ago, we must be in at least the thousandth millenium.
We're in the 3rd millenium, just as we're in the 21st century and the 2006th year. All three are measured from the year which behaves like a year 0...only there is no year 0, so it's really year 1 BC...gah bad math!
