In a company:
595 people have driven to work
170 people have taken the train to work
85 people have driven and taken the train to work
170 people live at the company
In total, how many people work at this particular company?

85 people have driven and taken the train to work
170 people live at the company
In total, how many people work at this particular company?
Hint
Don't count the people who drive and take the train as two different people.Answer
Since 85 people drive and take the train to work, you have to subtract them out of the 595 people who drive to work and the 170 people who take the train to work. This way, you will not double count these people. So, 595-85=510 and 170-85=85
Now, you can treat these people as individuals and add them all together.
510 people drive + 85 people taking the train + 170 living at the company + 85 people who drive and take the train = 850 people in total.

Nice, but didn't need such a long answer explianation.
You just need to subtract 85 from one of the numbers and then add the total.

Without meaning any offence, you really dont need a degree in maths for this one...
The answer proposed would be correct only if the teaser stated:
No one else works at the compary (if that is not stated, there could well be some who ride a car that someone else drives, who walk or jog all the way, or ride a bicycle, or, what would be more unusual, ride a horse, mule, donkey, camel, unicycle, or segway, or roller-skake, ice-skate, skateboard, come by scooter, boat, by dogsled, snowmobile, or wheelchair, airplane, helicopter, etc. or a combination thereof.)
and perhaps:
All those mentioned actuallly work rather than pretend to work all day and just collect a check on payday.
