Multiple Equations
The letters A through H below each represent a number from 1 to 9. Each letter represents the same number throughout and no number is used twice. If C=3 what is H?
A - C = D
G x E = F
B + G = H
D/C = E
A - C = D
G x E = F
B + G = H
D/C = E
Answer
H = 5A=9, B=1, C=3,
D=6, E=2, F=8,
G=4

Okay, but how did you get it. I got lost trying to figure out what to substitute.
If C=3 then D is a multiple of 3 because E is a whole number. That means both C and D are multiple of 3 then so is A (A-C=D). That means A is 9 and D is 6. Now that means E is 2 so F is even and G must be less than 5 because all are single digits. A bit of trial and error with the remaining numbers will get it for you.
Thank you. I completely overlooked the fact that in dividing by 3, the answer had to be a positive integer.
i got it...but it did involve writing numbers down on paper. i used the method you explained to fishmed....Thanks...i enjoyed
Nice easy teaser. You didn't need to give C = 3 because there is no other solution.
