Sibling Rivalries
Logic-Grid
Logic Grid puzzles come with a handy interactive grid that will help you solve the puzzle based on the given clues.Logic-Grid
Anyone who has even one brother or sister knows that sibling rivalries permeate into every aspect of life. Well the Humdingers are no different. Four boys (Jason, Matt, Tom and David) and one girl (Sarah--don't you feel for her!) are as different as children get. The one thing that they have in common is their love of sports and food (sounds familiar to this author, mmm food). Each child who is either in 3rd, 5th, 6th 8th or 12th grade plays on their school's team in their favorite sport (Golf, Soccer, Tennis, Football or Hockey). After they finish playing, they each go home and watch their favorite baseball team (buying 5 TVs was the best move Mrs. Humdinger ever made) while enjoying their favorite stadium food (hot dogs, pretzels, nachos w/o meat, ice cream or chicken fingers) to get them in the mood. Your job is to match each child with the grade, sport they play, favorite team and favorite food. ENJOY!
1. Jason's younger brother (not Tom) loves to play hockey.
2. Sarah has two younger brothers neither of whom golf or eat pretzels.
3. Tom's favorite baseball team moved from Brooklyn to LA.
4. Whoever plays tennis loves to watch the Orioles.
5. Matt is in 5th grade.
6. The Cardinals fan eats neither ice cream nor hot dogs, but does play hockey.
7. The Orioles fan is a vegetarian.
8. Whoever is in 6th grade plays soccer and eats hot dogs.
9. The Yankees fan likes to watch his favorite team while eating Ben & Jerry's.
10. The football player likes chicken.
11. Jason idolizes Fred Couples so is obviously into golf.
12. David, who does not eat meat, has a younger sibling who is a Met fan.

I would like to comment on the first clue which says that Jason's older brother (not Tom) loves hockey, but when I look at the answer it was Matt who plays hockey who is only in the 5th grade while Jason is much older than him.So I think there is confusion in the first clue.
Hi there,
I think there is an error in this one. The first clue says that Jason's older brother plays hockey. Jason is in the 8th grade and Matt is in 5th. The answer states that Matt plays hockey, which goes against the first clue.

Apart from the confusion over clue 1 can I please point out not everyone who is a member of this site is from America and there fore is not going to no which sports team came from which state .This is not a criticism as this has happened in another logic grid, just please spare a thought for us who have not had the pleasure of visiting and getting to know your country
the first clue got me too. i ended up with David,12th,hockey, cardinals, pretzel and Matt,5th,tennis,oriols,nachos. still the teaser was fun.
I can't believe that got past both me and the judges with that error. I wish they could edit it.
Sorry for the confusion.
Sorry for the confusion.
Okay...so I'm not crazy. If you just throw out that first clue though, you can get the right answer. I was a little confused until I did that. It was a great logic teaser though.
Thanks Diamond. I wonder if anyone knows whether there is a way to get the editors to remove that clue. If so, let me know. Thanks.
I usually don't have to read through the clues again in order to solve these teasers, so the first clue didn't phase me at all and I solved it correctly, in spite of the error. For that reaosn, I can see why the editors missed it. But for those teasers that need to be read through more than once, I can see the confusion. But great job, I thought it was an awesome teaser. A good challenge, which I love.
I was doing good but the clues screwed me up.
hmmm, thought I had it cracked but got a few wrong.
Also I agree with Unicorn, being from outside the US I have no idea which baseball team moved states, you could tell me the New York yankees (if there is such a team!) moved to California and I might believe you! Spare a thought for us over the atlantic!

Great puzzle! I also switched tennis/orioles and cardinals/hockey between Matt and David. Also, I did not assume the nachos had meat in them, so distinguishing which pairing is "correct" seems impossible without either clue #1 or an assumption that the nachos do contain meat. Or did I miss a clue?
Great teaser that was lots of fun. Frustrating because of the error(s?). Also, another point, the same family could have more than one vegetarian. I also agree that it should be clear as to what kind of nachos -- I assumed cheese nachos while solving the puzzle. After correction, this teaser will be super!!!!
Thanks for the comments. I have submitted corrections based on your ideas. Hope this makes the teaser more enjoyable for all.

the baseball got me again - how about a crash course in teams for us ignorant foreigners....(only joking!)
I also managed to get the tennis & hockey switched like a few others did, but still enjoyed it

This was a great teaser and challenging! I nearly got them all right but since, I'm not a baseball fan, I got their favorite teams mixed up!
at the end i saw no way to know whether jason or dave was in 12th or 8th grade - i had to guess...did i miss a clue there? otherwise really good one!!!
I was confused by the clue where it says "Jason´s younger brother (not Tom)- it sounds like Tom is not Jason´s younger brother.
I agree wif marianj79! Did we miss sth? Great puzzle anyways!
So what in this teaser differentiates David from Jason? I could not seem to find a clue that told me who was older unless I made certain assumptions -- like that he was a lacto-vegetarian or something like that. Which clue would tell me who was older?
For all those foreigners out there who said they didn't know which team moved: I'm from the US and I didn't even know which team moved, so it's not just you! I guess you just have to be a baseball fan.
Ok, I have tried and tried and tried. I get all the way to the end, and cannot tell the grades for David/Jason. I read the comments and see that some others have the same question. Will someone who solved this _please_ tell me, which clue (or combination there of) differentiates the two???
Thanks.
Thanks.
I had the same problem with 8/12 grade!
Me too who is older david or jason how can you tell?
Well, I just did it again and this time after going through all the clues I went back and filled in the grid and everything was filled out and checked out right but for the life of me I can't figure out how I got David in 12th grade and Jason in 8th grade!!!!
It is funny that so many people, even in the US complained about the Dodgers clue but everyone seemed to know that Ben & Jerry's was ice cream. It must make Tommy Lasorda's heart bleed Dodger blue to know that ice cream is better known than the Dodgers!!!!!!
I agree I could't figure out which boy was in 8 and which was in 12. Other than that I figured out everything else. I didn't know which team moved but I googled it and got the answer that way....I use google alot on clues where I don't know the answer.
I agree there is no way to tell the difference between Jason and David re: the 8th and 12 grade. One can guess its a 50/50 shot.
I read clue 1. "Jason's younger brother (not Tom) loves to play hockey" like this; jason has only 2 younger brothers -Tom and one more (who likes hockey). When I read the clue like that I also could put Jason in 8th grade because if he was in 12th he would have 3 younger brothers. I speak a scandinavian language so I may be totally wrong in my interpretation and by the way I didn't know anything about pretzels, Ben&Jerry or baseball. I had to google it. Nice teaser but I like them more difficult.
and you don't need clue 7 at all
I got to David/Tom/Jason being in 3rd/8th/12th
Then Clue 2 says Sarah's younger can't like pretzals/Golf which means David/Jason can't be 3rd.
So, Tom had to be 3rd.
Now I have David and Jason for 8th and 12th:
Could someone (anyone?) please tell me how they determined who was the oldest?!

After reading all the comments I will suggest the reason we can't tell whether David/Jason is older is because of the modification to clue #1. It used to say Jasons OLDER brother (which caused other problems for sure) but would eliminate Jason from being the OLDEST (12th). Now they have edited that to say YOUNGER brother and you no longer have the negative for Jason being the oldest...so I would suggest this teaser be edited one more time to somehow include this negative (or a negative for David being in the 8th grade) so the puzzle can be solved completely. It was fun though up until that point.
I was just confused in the end on what grades jason and david were in. i couldnt figure out who was in 12th grade and who was in 8th.
crackurcode - your comment makes sense (appreciated on a logic-grid puzzle ) So, this is a good puzzle, just needs another tweak.
I agree that there is no way to distinguish the two eldest. Help!
This one had a nice amount of challenge to it without being overpowering. Very nice job and thanks for the teaser!
Fun, teaser! Just wish there were a way to differentiate 8/12!
I also fell foul of the first clue.
As to DaveC's comment about about the popularity of baseball vs ice cream, Ben and Jerry's is widely available on supermarket shelves across the world, but baseball is only widely played in a limited number of countries, the US, Japan I believe, and maybe a few others. However, even as a heathen from England, I was aware of the deep mourning of New Yorkers when the Dodgers left Brooklyn and headed for California, just after WWII I believe?

It would seem there are a few permutations of answers that fit the clues, I've just done it again, and got it wrong AGAIN, but if I go over my answers, they seem to fit the clues.
Oh well, it keeps me off the streets.
I do admire the authors who create these grids that give so much pleasure to so many people.
