Brain Teasers
Chicken or Egg
This is answerable:
Which came first? The chicken or the chicken egg?
Which came first? The chicken or the chicken egg?
Hint
Think evolution.Answer
The egg came first. The creature that gave birth to the modern day chicken was not a modern day chicken. This is because mutations occur from parent to offspring, not in an animal.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

Also, the existence of reptiles before the existence of birds means that there were eggs looooooooong before there were chickens.
I meant the chicken egg, sorry if that's not clear or obvious.
Then what gave existance to the chicken egg.
Also, your answer does not answer your question. So what if "mutations occur from parent to offspring", It still does not answer why the chicken egg existed before the chicken.
Something that was not a modern day chicken laid a modern day chicken egg through the miricale of mutation
or, just to be argumentative, the religious creationist could argue that obviously the chicken came first, since [insert deity here] created all animals, including the chicken. =)
well, you can argue just about ANYTHING with religion
I would like to add that dinosaurs also had eggs, therefore, it shows that the chicken didn't come first as said above
This is incorrect or correct, depending on your belief. If you're a christian then you will believe that the chicken came first because God created all animals. It says no where in the bible that God created all eggs for the animals to hatch from on the 6th day.
In other words, I agree with bluetwo.
I think this is a riddle that should not have an answer and can be argued successfully through both sides.
here's another question : wat came first? the DINOSAUR or the EGG?
hte egg still came first. And missy, i know you are long gone, but the Bible was never ment to be a science book. Ever heard of a metaphor?
Well, mogmatt16, if you mention the topic of science, then your solution/answer for the teaser above is quite unacceptable. In the question you used the word "chicken" and then in the answer you mention/added "modern day chicken". In science you almost never "assume" something unless you are talking about a hypothesis - which either will be proven right or wrong, though not always definite, after multiple successions of experimenting. Besides, by saying "modern day chicken", you can logically deduce that there was "olden day chicken". Going back to the question you asked which came first, "chicken" or "(chicken) egg". Well, since you never specified what kind of chicken we were solving, your answer is insufficient enough and needless to say, you haven’t explained anything. Sorry if I'm ranting or even "just to be argumentative", first brought up by bluetwo, but I just thought to give some feedback, but obviously this is just a very poor excuse for my rant
yeah i knew dat (its 2005 :-)
This is not an obvious answer, like mentioned before it really depends on your religion. God created all animals 2 of each. So I say the chicken came first.
I was thinking the answer was 'The' as it comes first in the body of the teaser.
thnaks for clearing that up
technicaly organisms came first because of the chemicle comboonations forming them
and for all of us who dont believe in evolution?
All those who don't believe in evolution are ignorant.
Sorry, but if you're telling me that evolution does not exist, then you're also telling me that we can't adapt to illnesses, disease, and the weather conditions of the area we live in. We evolve the minute we get a disease (i.e. chicken pox) by building immunities!

I don't believe in people who don't believe in evolution.
It's funny. Laugh. Also funny:
"Thank God for evolution."

I've seen plenty of eggs that never became chickens, and every chicken I've seen hatched from an egg.
Therefore the egg came first.
Therefore the egg came first.
I thought it was the chicken, since that was the first part of the question. I guess it would have been in the Trick category if that was the answer.
Technically, this question has nothing to do with logic at all, except as it applies to different types of sciences.
well this was easy
This was a good teaser. But, as said before, what about Christian beliefs? In my opinion, i dont believe in evolution at all. i dont see any possible way with it. But i liked your teaser, and how you took a famous question and applied it
While I believe in the THEORY of evolution (in that things do evolve somewhat through the course of time), I first and foremost believe that it started with God creating the animals to evolve in the first place... that puts the chicken first.
I don't believe chickens evolved from a little fish in the sea. Chickens may have evolved to be quite different over the course of thousands of years, but God still put it here in the first place.
You might mock my faith in God, but remember that the early beliefs surrounding evolution are unsubstantiated and therefore called THEORY of evolution. I look at this amazing Earth full of nature all working in perfect unison, excepting humans, and there is no doubt in my mind that it's too perfect to not have a higher power's influence.
Have you not noticed that every other rock floating out there as far as humans have been able to see are all just empty rocks? Millions of empty rocks. And then there's Earth.

Smart teaser
This only works with evolution...to which I am opposed.
I don't think this teaser should have been approved in the first place, because it cannot be proved. Is there any user of Braingle who was here in Earth's first days? *cricket, cricket*
No. I didn't think so. So logically, this teaser has no right answer and I think it should be removed.

i have the answer to why this is wrong and it has nothing to do with evolution v. creationism!
the question states: which came first? the chicken or the CHICKEN egg.
if in fact the egg that hatched the first chicken was laid by some creature that was not a chicken itself, then the egg wouldn't be called a CHICKEN egg at all! it would be the egg of whatever animal laid it. then the mutated chicken that hatched out of it would lay the first chicken egg.
so...the chicken came first even if evolution is applied!
