I got as far as figuring out that both sides were the same, but there was NO way I was going to get the limerick in its final published form! Really cool teaser, mainly because I never thought math and limericks (two things I'm quite fond of) could be combined so expertly. WTG!
Well, glad you all liked it. I will have to work on another one now.

VERY DIFFICULT! The hint did not help, but the answer makes sense.
This poem was written by John Saxon (an author of math textbooks).
GEEZ....How did you come up with that? ~Pretty cool!~

Nice. But as pointed out by itsonlyme, you should give attribution. Your comment that you 'will have to work on another one now' implies you wrote it. Bad juju.
brilliant. i have a friend who is a math prof in texas. i'll be sending him this one.....
You'd have to be pretty smart to figure that one out.
Good one.
Even though I couldn't have gotten it without the looking at the answer.

I didn't get it until I looked at the answer, but it's a great teaser! Love it!
Was really hard, got me stumped

Great fun. I figured out the math part but would never have gotten the rhyme. To the math point...to make the formula correct put parens around the (5x11).
I am sorry if it seems that I implied that I composed this puzzle. I did not write it. I did not know at the time who did write it, as it was sent to me a long time ago. But I am happy that someone provided the information. When I said I would try writing another one I meant that I thought that I would try my hand at writing one, is all.
Are all the submisssions to this site supposed to be original creations by the submitter? If I had known that I certainly would not have submitted it. Thanks for pointing out the error in my ways.

I thought it was allright
i wonder if anyone got that...
I thought it was weird
Well I thought it was AWESOME I got the math part of it right, which was 81, just didn't know the poem. I'm going to print it out for my Algebra Teacher. We were working on word problems last night. He'll love it!
that one was easy but good
HA HA! That was very clever, but I didn't get it..... I was thinking more of like an expression or something.....
i punched the numbers into the calculator and it equaled 519, not 81
that was TOtaLLy HaRd! DUh!!!
I luv math but I hat literature. so I guess I had somewhat of an advantage.
That was REALLY dum
It is a fun poem and it was hard!!!!!!!!
Outstanding!
I thought it was a pretty darn good one. But I am also dumb at math. I was reading the phone to see if it was a message
Too many +(/^))*-\+='s around TAX season to enjoy.
The poem was nice, if it just wasn't "mixed" with the math.

Wow!
hey, jaggirl! i did it in my head, and i got 81! (maybe you should work on your calculator skills...the ( )'s really do mean something!)
donfrench, i thought it was great!

well done had me thinkn 4 a while
Don, it's not simply that the submissions here are supposed to be original. What you did is plagiarism: you took the original work of someone else and published it under your own name.
In addition, this puzzle is protected under copyright in at least the USA and UK.
I strongly recommend that you read up on the intellectual property rights of the areas you inhabit, since you apparently don't have an innate sense for the concepts.
There's a huge difference between showing a puzzle to a friend when you find it in a book, and copying the puzzle to publish on a high-traffic web site. The first is "fair use"; the second is subject to prosecution.

It was a little too hard!!
Hey itsonlyme (that comment is waaaay up there, it took me a while to comment) it's interesting that Saxon wrote it. My dad teaches Saxon math, and he was stumped for weeks on this puzzle....in fact, i wonder if he's figured out the answer yet....lol.
Good one, donfrench! I absolutely loved it!!

I've not read that many, but this is the first one that made me laugh out loud! Werry good indeed
Woh! Clever!
Excellent teaser! This is definitly one of a kind! It would have been better if I had actually gotten it, but oh well. Besides that, I love it!
'I solved this one in my head in less than one minute. Way too easy.' I read a better version of this teaser somewhere.
I found it very creative and nice! Well done!
