The Mark
Only five of the words in the riddle-line below are common names (bird-types; subspecies) of gulls. The remaining one is a gull, too, but not a bird. Which one is the oddity?
Herring, California, Pigeon, Western, Iceland, Laughing
Herring, California, Pigeon, Western, Iceland, Laughing
Hint
Think of another meaning for the word *gull* (noun), or *to gull* (verb). The title is a hint, also.Answer
PigeonAnother meaning for the word *gull* is to trick, or to fool, or to con. So one who is so tricked, fooled, or conned is also the *gull* (noun form). *Pigeon* is a slang-term also for one who is set up and tricked, fooled, or conned.

that was pretty cool
Thanks, Janisha, for the visit AND for taking the time to comment.
Yeah, that one was fun to do, but tough (I'm not a bird-person) so I had to do a bit of research. THANKS !!

i still don get it
to SWAFF. Thanks for the visit and the comment.
I try to answer all questions or problems in comments, if I can. They are all types or subspecies of seagulls, except *Pigeon*. There are no types or names of seagulls like *Pigeon Gulls*. Another definition for *gull*, however, is to fool or to trick someone.
The word *pigeon* is slang for a *mark* or a *target* who is being gulled or fooled by con-persons.
That makes *pigeon* a gull, but not a bird. I hope this helps.

Oh yeah, laughing is a bird, while a pigeon isn't? I didn't know that....
Back again. Got this one correct - the title of the mark gave me the answer.
The scientific name "Larus atricilla" is a very rare vagrant species of gull appearing mostly from late spring. The common name is "Laughing Gull". It is mostly white with a black head and black tipped wings.
As for the others, they are all legit gulls - except for the pigeon.
Good one badbunnee!

WHAT the heck did that mean?????
Thank you, bird-person (to froggy).
And ... to patpat; if I may help to answer your concern; what she (froggy) is saying is that there IS a seagull called a *laughing gull* (common name) but there is no seagull called a *pigeon gull*. I hope this helps. If not, give me a PM and I'll give you the citations for all the information I gathered related to which are seagulls and which are not. Also I'll give you the dictionary and WWW definitions for *gull* as a *pigeon* in a con-game. Thanks for the visit and the comment.

badbunnee:
Your welcome. I'm not a bird person either - knew the others but had to look up laughing gull. My specialty is a Turkey at Thanksgiving!

More to weemamie ...
VERY glad to hear the contemporary SAT's are learning something (maybe from Braingle, eh, whot?) about what it takes to "learn the tongue".
VERY gratifying. Keep it up wee ...
You're doin' great !!!
AND ... we (me and Clint-the-cat) hope BadBunnee didn't "gull" TOO many folks during his brief-but-shining stint on Braingle. Maybe the cause of Braingleitis will flourish anon, anyway.
Thanks to you all.

i thought a pigeon was a bird
A pigeon, as a synonym to the word gull, is not a bird, but a person who is subject to someone's scam or con game. Very nice, BB.
