Thought the hint was a bit of a red herring. Immediately thought of neutrons and nuclei. Good answer though.
I started thinking of Sherlock Holmes stories (just what were the names of the original
books - did any of them fit A. N.?), thinking that S could stand for stories. I also thought about properties of elementary

A friend of mine was brought up in Saudi Arabia and moved to England at about age 10.. he was told to write the answer to an equasion in arabic numerals.... and then told off when the teacher couldn't understand all the backwards scribbles. >.<

To Atropos - Huh? The numerals we use ARE arabic... don't understand your story. The arabic student's answer would have looked identical to ours!

A very enjoyable teaser! To musicmaker: as far as I know, our arabic numerals, though similar to the arabic-arabic ones, are not 100% the same. Plus, the student in Atropus' story would probably be writing them from left to right (since the teacher said "Arabic"...)
