Sometimes you need to take one step backwards to take two steps forwardsSometimes: time+time = sum times or 'sometimes'
you
need: dough manipulation = knead or 'need'

Well done - however, I've not heard of the initial part of the saying (sometimes you need to...) which made it more difficult. I got the two steps forward part...
that's tricky.
Thanks again ;)
Now that one was really difficult...I got part but couldn't put it all together. My way was really strange and sounded like I should be living on Mars or in a far, far away galaxy....
I got the last half
Good job on this one
Good job on this one
Thanks
that was a tough one, but it was awsome
Thanks
didn't get it at all, not a rebus genius here, very well thought out good job
Cheers
I got the first part as "time and time again". Got the knead, but didn't have the patience for the last part (maybe because I'm supposed to be doing other things!!!)
Hahaha Scihead... don'tcha just love Braingle for that! Thanks for stopping by anway.
I got about half there but never stepped back so I could solve it completely .. I guess your puzzle offers some good advice I really kneaded! Actually, I need the dough more but that's another story
Thanks Zona. Isn't it fascinating that two words relating to bread also relate to money... dough and bread as per breadwinner. We all knead a bit of that dough to surive - does that make us all bakers?
Very good. A hint would be helpful though. That was quite challenging.
Thanks Michelle... yeah, maybe I should have thrown a hint into this one.
actually the title was a good hint, but i still missed this one(second one today)
GREAT JOB
GREAT JOB
Thanks schatzy
Very good. I too started with "time and time again", and didn't get the whole thing without looking. Well done!
Thanks Paul... I've been seeing a lot of you lately , thanks for stopping by and giving feedback.
Yep, very good!
Once I got the beginning it was quite easy.
That was very very clever! I love rebuses, especially challenging ones. I actually got some of it, but to tell the truth, I've never heard the phrase said that way, so I never would have thought that was the solution. Is that the way you've heard it? I've always heard it like "How's the project going?", "Well, I feel like I'm taking two steps forward and one step back, but blah blah blah...".
The way it is here, it's like advice instead of almost a "complaint". But maybe it is used both ways, and I've just never heard this way before. The pet backwards part is very clever! It could still be done the way I've heard it, just "step step word word word word and pets." would be one way, not the only way.
Anyway, thanks for the challenge!

I have to agree with Zonahobo's 7/22/05 comment. Great rebus. Thanks for posting.
Too tough for me. I got the sometime you need to take, then was thrown off by 'pets' and couldn't finish it off. Good one
I got time and time again, and that was it. Lost an hours sleep last night, that's my story and I'm sticking to it !
I read it as "time and time again" too - loved your comment AuntieSis!
challenging rebus - I'm finally figuring out how to figure these out! (poor grammar? well I lost an hour of sleep last night too)
Woke up to bright sunshine!

Cute! But I couldn't get it for the life of me.
I'm with Antiesis and Gaylewolf. It was too hard for me, but it was a good one. I'll be sleepy all week.

Great teaser.
Monday~
Thanks so much for the comments. I very much enjoyed creating this one and have enjoyed everyones creative comments just as much
Like others, I, too, figured the first part of the phrase was "time and time again". To clue your readers more to the idea of "sum" or "some" times, perhaps it would help if you added the equals sign (=) after the second time.
Two years later, I STILL didn't get it
but I really liked it - clever!
What I REALLY liked were your responses to the comments, Dsquared!

Fun! Great job!
I'm with Gayle. Still stuck on time and time again.
Well done, dsquared. Nice to see good riddles posted by Kiwis!
Like my brain-scrambled but solvable.
Step. Durn it. I felt better knowing I got Some of it Had fun trying, and got at least some of my Monday morning brain working!
I got all but the last part and am still trying to figure out the "step." Why would only one word in the whole thing be backwards? I did not figure that one out. It was half good anyway>
that was a tuffy. I got hung up on "pets"
Some of these really make me wonder who has this kind of time. Not only to write things in such ridiculous ways, but to then translate them back into proper English. I have nothing against this specific Rebus, so please do not take this personally, I just.... I don't get it at all.
I love it. It throws almost every trick in the rebus arsenal into one puzzle. Funny , creative, tough, FUN.
Third time around and I STILL didn't get it! oh well, maybe next time
Like others, only partially solved it; never heard this saying before?
It was fun though, thanks for posting!

Yep. Three years later, still did not get it. Still love it. I got "Add time you need to take (pets?) to take two steps".
