Beethoven's Teaser
Beethoven was a lover of teasers of all kinds, and often submitted the following to his friends.
What word can be created when following these directions?
1) Start at D.
2) Go up Eight.
3) Go down Eleven.
4) Go up Five.
What word is it?

Hint
A little knowledge of Beethoven would help greatly.Answer
Deaf.Beethoven was a composer, obviously, and utilized the Musical Key in this teaser. When he says "Go up Eleven", he is referring to the letters "ABCDEFG." Going up Eight notes from 'D' brings us to 'E' (because, of course, the musical scale simply repeats itself in the next octave). Going down Eleven notes brings us to 'A', and going up Five notes brings us to 'F'. Hence, DEAF (which, incidentally, Beethoven was).

I love it. Thanks. I read music at an early age. Band nerd I guess.
It is kinda strange funny if you misstep the last note you come up with dead, which could be apropo
I Did Not Get It But Now I Do.
Nice Teaser
Nice Teaser
I got it, great teaser
BORING
Alright. It was good, but I didn't know it had to do with music notes. I knew Beethoven was deaf though.
i thought it was the alphabet
VERY SHARP
VERY SHARP
Good job, easy but cute.
It was really hard. But it was funny at the end.Great teaser
easy; I play WAY too many instruments. nice teaser.

Beethoven didn't speak English, duh. He spoke German and spatterings of French and Latin, but NOT English. I was a band nerd too, 25 years . . . Good teaser though.
This is fictitious. Beethoven probably did not write teasers either, but that did not stop me from writing it.
it was easy and fun!!!
Very clever and creative. Keep them coming, i really liked this one.
I don't know music notes, so I was out in left field.
Good one, tissue -
Amazing the music this genius created and he was deaf - obviously his other senses were very acute.
No, Beethoven probably didn't make up this teaser, but it's clever! Give up the criticisms!!

Good one, easy once I figured it was music notes and not the whole alphabet...Thanks!
Nice teaser, easy if you know anything about music. I played violin for 9 years during my school years, so I got it right away. Thanks for posting.
Nicely done and very easy for this musician! By the way, since your clue said to start at D, I actually started in the KEY of D. Following your directions in the key of D major actually lands us on D-SHARP (which is in the key signature). The technical answer to your teaser is DEAF#
WHOOPS! I meant F-SHARP! Guess I blew my own correction!
Simple for anyone that can read notes.
Am I the only one that thought it started at C? Meaning cdefgab?
I liked this one a lot! It took me a second to realize that it was talking about the music scale, after that it was simple. Beethoven is my favorite composer of all time!
I really enjoyed this one--got it right away, but I thought it was clever. I'm going to use it on my music classes (I teach) at school. Beethoven is one of my favorite composers, too. I love "Moonlight Sonata"and his 5th symphony.
Very cute I didn't really have to think about it, but I'm sure it stumped some people who have never played an instrument or learnt the elementary rudiments of music. Quite cleaver actually!
Very easy and good fun. Learnt to read music years ago and that made this teaser obvious. Enjoyed it. Gooden
This is cute but the numbers are all wrong. To go from D to E would either be a major 2nd (2) or a 9th. Going 8 would be an OCTAVE and would be another D.
TOO TRUE, TOO TRUE!!!
Volkanoman, you are correct in terms of musical intervals, but if you put your finger on C and then move up 8 notes you will land on D. C to C is called an octave, but the first C is then counted also. When you play board game and are told to move 8 spaces, you do not count the space you are on. So on the keyboard, going up a fifth and going up 5 keys would give different results. I was thinking as you were at first, also. But the directions as worded are correct.
I knew Beethoven was a composer, but I don't no much about how musical notes work. With that in mind it was pretty difficult for me.
I got once I read the hint Lovely!!
Fun & interesting teaser!!!!!
Very interesting teaser!
Loved it!
Of course, I didn't get it... I know music, but still ran up and down the alphabet, landed on B and assumed the word was Be or Bee.

Clever- lot's of connections!
AROB or AWOR, whatever you prefer.
I loved this teaser - just the right amount of challenge for me this morning! I would like more teasers like this one! Thanks. And, dear doehead, I'm sure your new signature (AWOR) stands for a wise old romantic!
Have a great day, Sir!

Was fairy easy, I assumed immediately it followed the music scales. Still a good idea and may have challenged some.
Again, a fun teaser!
I like that Gayle. A wise old romantic.....but is doehead old? Depends on where you are looking from.
And the teaser was pretty good too, but easy.

thats funny awsome teaser
It never seems fair to me to do teaser that a lot of people know nothing about. I am not musically inclined but for the sake of trying I was using the "do re me fa sol la ti do" route, which did not work out. Thanks Habs for your compliment yesterday. From your Habs2933 I am guessing you are 10 years behind me and doing great also. Am I right?
Wasn't going to comment on this teaser as I did a few years ago and my opinion has not changed, but I see Babe has asked me a question.
Babe - I am 41. My favourite hockey team is the Montréal Canadiens. They are more often referred to as The "HABS" - it is short for les habitants (the original inhabitants of New France (now Québec). The numbers 29 and 33 are my two favourite players (Ken Dryden and Patrick Roy).

(D go up three) + "OT" IT!
2 yrs of piano lessons finally paid off. Took long enough.
Catmom, I love your subtle sense of humor - your comments always make me smile - thanks! Here, too, my piano lesson days really helped me solve this puzzle. Thanks for posting!
Interesting explanation HABS!
Still a good puzzle. Still lots of good comments.
Haha - I though it was elevator!
But... but... Beethoven was German - did he really send posers to his friends in English?
Utilizing my love of music (and the hint), I got it pretty quickly. I also learned an interesting fact about Beethoven that I didn't know. Props to you, your teaser, and Beethoven!
I had no idea on this one and do not know the music scale. I had a feeling it had to with the music scale but there was no way you can get tis one without knowing it.
