Brain Teasers
Largest or Smallest?
Detective Sing was sitting and eating dinner with his friend, John. John was excited because, on the way into the room, he had seen a man offering to double the amount of money he was given by any person, provided they could answer one question correctly.
"All he wants to know, Dan," said John, "is which of these two statements is incorrect: Australia is the biggest island or Australia is the smallest continent. If I can tell him which statement is incorrect, he'll double my money!"
"Save your money," said Detective Sing. "There's no way you can win that bet."
Why not?

Answer
Australia is considered BOTH the largest island and the smallest continent. Neither statement is incorrect, which means that the con artist will never be required to pay back the money.Hide Answer Show Answer

Nice teaser, proud to say I got it right. Now a general question. Why is it we do not consider any of the other continental masses "islands"? Technically they are, aren't they? Surrounded on all sides by water..isn't that an island? I always wondered that, your teaser brought it to mind.
Fun, but I have to dispute the answer. Australia is the world's smallest continent, but it is not the world's largest island . Greenland is the world's largest island.
PurpleFlower is correct "Greenland is, by area, the world's largest island which is not a continent in its own right."
But isn't an island a piece of land that is surrounded by water? and since the world is round every piece of land is surrounded by water, so technically every piece of land (Example: North America) is a island... since no one ever limited how big an island can be...
Australia isn't a continent. Australasia/Oceania is.
So the detective's name is DanSing
