Brain Teasers
I Wonder 2
Trivia
Trivia brain teasers have some element of trivia in them, but they are not just pure trivia questions.Trivia
What common household item wouldn't have become popular if it wasn't for another invention in 1928 (it didn't take off until 1930)?
Hint
You could say it was popularized by the best thing to happen since itself.....Answer
The toaster. The first electric toaster was invented in 1893 in Great Britain by Crompton and Co (UK) and re-invented in 1909 in the United States. It only toasted one side of the bread at a time and it required a person to stand by and turn it off manually when the toast looked done. Charles Strite invented the modern timer, pop-up toaster in 1919.
Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented the bread slicer, which he started working on in 1912. At first, Rohwedder came up with the idea of a device that held the slices together with hat pins (not a success). In 1928, he designed a machine that sliced and wrapped the bread to prevent the sliced bread from going stale. Pre-sliced bread was popularized by Wonder Bread in 1930, helping to spread the toaster's popularity further.
The hint refers to the common phrase "The best thing since sliced bread".
The title is a subtle hint to "Wonder Bread".

Nice! There is no way I would have worked this out if it hadn't been for your other teasers on the same theme!
Your teasers are tricky
I had no idea till i read the hint, and even then if i hadnt doen ur other teaser about toatsers, i never wulda gotten it

I got it after seeing the hint, especially after the other toaster teaser you did.
Hmmm, I think I will have my toast with a little bit of strawberry jam, please.
Wow, just did a different toaster teaser, so knew this one. Easy and fun
Fascinating.
This one was good! I knew there was a toaster in there. I just "wonder" why companies that make health destroying products become so successful. I'll stick to real food, such as whole grains the way they were created to be eaten!
That wasn't a hint. That was the answer.
Good one. In an instint I came up with ice cream and frige. Thought about for a moment but could'nt change my mind.
Too vague... give us more to go on, please!
Learned something new today after reading the answer. Hmmm...

My mother had one of those old toasters for years after the modern ones came out. You had to turn the slices manually to toast both sides, and if you didn't watch out, you could burn them -- in which case, my thrifty mom would scrape the burnt toast and make you eat it anyway, blech!
LOL....got it right...and the toast portion, too.
Before the hint I had no clue - knowing bread was needed, toaster was best guess. Thanks that was fun.
fun and educationel
Very cool! Love the trivia!
Good bit of trivia which I didn't know, but probably very few people would know either. Learn something new each day I say. Thanks for sharing.
The title gave it away to me right away. Then the hint made me 100 percent positive about my answer. Good one!
That was a good one! I guessed the clothes drier with the washing machine needing to have been invented first.
I'm with 4Princess.The title gave it away
Got it after the hint.. That is my favorite saying..You're the best thing since sliced bread!
I was thinking something else, which I'm too embarrassed to say!
easy but fun
Nice
That was interesting, I like it when people give a history & I learn something, Knew the Expression!
Still didn't get it. Tired!
We used a similar toaster when camping where you had to turn the bread & my mom had one
B4 the electric kind. Oops giving away my age. Mom had me young tho Ha Ha
Thanks enjoyed your Teaser

Well played! Got it w/o the hint, hard but just enough of a clue in the title. Great explanation on the history.
T oo early... must have coffee!!
When I was a little kid (long, long ago!) we had a toaster that did one side and then you had to pullit down and the mechanism turned the toast over so the other side could be done!
I am old but not that old. Sorry I didn't get it right. Thanks for posting the teaser. It was fun trying.
Monday~

Got it after the hint. I too remember "watching" the toaster and scraping.
I never would have gotten this in a million years.
Interesting bit of history, but not really what I would call a "teaser". It would fit better in a trivia-type game.
Whoa...Nice.
my wild-eyed guess was the vacuum cleaner, without which wall-to-wall carpet would never have become popular.
So clever And nice to work in the 'wonder' in the title I got sliced bread so went straight to knives, blades, and sharpening, thus knife sharpener. Your answer is much better
Thanks for the comments.
And just FYI, this teaser was submitted well before the quiz section was created.

Got it, going to use mine now...
yessss. I got it, pretty easy if you think hard
I liked that one and I got to learn some new facts as well.
I only got it after the clue.
But It's a great teaser!!!
But It's a great teaser!!!
Fun! Figured it was either the toaster or a bread box! Good one!
Got the bread reference from the title, just couldn't get the toaster idea to pop up. Happy Friday all!
Title gave it away. My $130 Breville is the best I've ever used.
I thought it was a can and a can opener until I read the hint.
I agree with Montie 317. This belongs in the trivia section. It was not even fun or interesting.
I guessed and got it right! No hint, and I didn't get the connection w/ the title. Yes, feel free to congratulate me!
Great question, very interesting.
I'm not sure about the argument that the toaster wouldn't have been popular without sliced bread, though. Where I grew up most people bought whole loaves but everyone ate toast. (A while ago now.) The pop-up toaster needs the slice to fit, so sliced bread is definitely easier, but with the old side-flap type it didn't make much difference exactly how thick it was. As I recall you had the toaster on the table right next to you so you would notice if it was going to burn - you couldn't leave it out of sight! The advantage of the old type is that you could get each piece exactly the way you liked it, and different people could have more or less well done toast.
