### Brain Teasers

# 1999

The year 1999 is special. Using the numbers 1, 9, 9 and 9, in that order, make the number 89. You may use brackets and any standard maths operation such as the square root, +, -, * and /. For example, 26 = -1 + 9 + 9 + 9.

### Answer

89 = -1 + 9 + (9 * 9).Hide Answer Show Answer

Why not -1-9+99

very easy, but creative...

WAY TO EASY! (Liked it anyway though)

That was pretty good.

that was good

Another simple solution is 1*9*9+9.

This equals 90.

I got something different-- -1 (negative 1) -1+(9*9)+9=89

9+9=81 so -1+(81)=80 so 80+9=89, which was what you wanted to get (correct me if I'm wrong)

9+9=81 so -1+(81)=80 so 80+9=89, which was what you wanted to get (correct me if I'm wrong)

never mind about what I said, it's just the same thing but backwards, ignore that message lol, sorry

-1+99-9

Oh, just noticed someone else figured that out too!

Why not 9*9-1+9=89

9*9=81

81-1=80

80+9=89

9*9=81

81-1=80

80+9=89

Far too simple, with many possibilities. Good for the brain, though!

As if it wasn'y already way too easy, you practically gave the answer in your example.
