There are 6 types of chess pieces in all. Each number in the group above represents the maximum possible squares that each type of piece can potentially attack.
Pawns can attack 2 squares diagonally forward.
Knight: 8 in all directions.
King: 8 in all directions
Bishop: 7 in one diagonal, 6 in the other.
Rook can attack: 7 vertically and 7 laterally.
Queen = range of rook + bishop.
Each piece needs to be at the center of the board for maximum threat.

what ? yah, whatever .... i don 't play chess .
Excellent fflopia!! Hard for anyone who doesn't play, of course... but after peeking at the hint, I guessed that it had to do with chess. Even tho I've played a little, I would need a refresher on how the pieces can be moved. Anyone want to teach me?
Pawns should be 3, because when they have not been moved they can move forward 1 space, forward 2 spaces or diagonal.
Choptlivva:
Pawns can move diagonally ONLY when they can capture a piece. They usually only move one space forward, except when they have not moved. Then they are allowed to move two spaces FORWARD, not diagonally. They cannot move backwards.
Rooks (or castles) can move in a straight line for any distance, horizontally or vertically.
Knights move in an L shape - two squares forward and one square to the side. They can go forward, backward, sideways, you name it.
Bishops move in diagonal lines only.
Queens can move diagonally, forward, or vertically, the same as a rook and a bishop combined.
Kings can move only one square at a time, forward, backward or diagonally.
And.. I think that's about it
