A Conversation

Fred said, "I am thinking of a devilishly tricky word that has five consonants in a row."
Nikita countered with, "That's a good one, but people are lining up to find a word with five vowels in a row."
What words were Fred and Nikita thinking of?

Great teaser! I got queueing right away, but thought Fred's word was trickstress. Oh, well, it was lots of fun!
Yes, I got queueing also, but could not come up with anything for the other one.
Wouldn't slyly have been a valid answer for Fred's word.
Excellent word play though.
Excellent word play though.
Let's not start the whole "y" as vowel argument here.
I have the "Y" argument all the time.
"Honey, I've got to go out for a while"
"Y?"
"Because my mates are expecting to see me"
"Y?"
"Because..."
Good teaser anyway. I really liked it. Don't ask why.

liked the ending....
I also got queueing, didn't get witchcraft though.. I was expecting it to be some word I didn't know!
it was to easy for me
I loved your play on words by including a clue to the answer in the question! I too got queueing and missed witchcraft. That "devilishly tricky" got me.
Great teaser!
Great teaser!
While other words could fit, these work nicely for a devilishly delightful teaser. Thanks.
i didn't get them but that ws a pretty good teaser.

I thought it was synchronous. Six consonants too.
Also got queueing, witchcraft never entered my mind... Great teaser, well-written. Thanks!
I didnt get witchcraft, thought it would be more exotic! I got the other. How about the post above, he had: "trickstress", or would it actually be "tricksteress"? Maybe. Anyway, that was a fun one. Hard to do though if you have no idea at all, even with the little clue given. Does anyone have any kind of system besides "hunt and peck" or whatever for finding words like this? Thanks, Phrebh!

The "y" in some examples is clearly a vowel.
How about STRENGTHS? In addition to ficve consonants in a row, it is a neat little word with eight consonants and only one vowel.

A facetious comment: Hmmmm, and Hiiii. There are a million of em'
I did not get any of them.. Whew it was tough!
wow, seemed kind of vague but that could be because I hadn't an idea of what the words are. i figured out the hint before it was given to me but my mind must be too primative to know the word... queing or qu something or other... haha, but it was a good teaser!

I think you all spelled Queuing wrong. Isn't there only one "e"?
This was a fun teaser. I, too, only got the second one, but that's ok.Will do better next time.
It can be spelled "queueing" or "queuing".
I missed 'queuing'queueing.
I missed queuing, must be an American spelling, but I was focused on witchcraft...if Fred and Nikita road trips over, they can check out the Welch town names, these are Devilish indeed. Good teaser.
Very nice. Thanks.
I had no clue.
It definetly devilishly tricky to figure this one out
I got the second one. The first seemed to lack info. Oh well.
i got witchcraft but not the other word. fun teaser. thank you.
Fantastic Teaser!
hey, nys... i thot the 1st answr was gypsy... haha... o well... o, n the nd'n:

Cool.
That was really cool!!
You could possibly add *rightship* although it came from a 1950 dictionary Will always enjoy tricky, yet devilishly clever puzzles. Keep them coming.
Here is a dynamically unique word, I am certain some of you should be able to better, with hardly using too much brain *stength*
SEQUOIA is another 4 vowel sequence word. I couldn't for the life of me come up with the 4 consonant word.
nice puzzle!
nice puzzle!
Like many others, I got the second one, but not the first one. I got stuck on the word being a "trick" that is Devilish. I never would have come up with witchcraft!
It would be right to correctly spell the word to better...lol **strength** Come on!
this was great!! it was sooooooo much fun!!
that was a nice one!!!!!!!!!!
"Latchstring" has 6 consonants in a row.
I also had "strengths" and "thousandths" as additional solutions.
I also had "strengths" and "thousandths" as additional solutions.
This was outstanding! I got the first one immediately but couldn't get the second. Very clever and creative.
I was thinking backstroke for the consonants.
VERRRRRRRRRRRY clever!
I was trying too hard. Sorry - good teaser tho Phrebd.
got the queueing, missed the witchcraft. couldn't think of a thing for that one. great job!!
I thought it was hard
Got queueing...missed witchcraft. Great teaser!
I , too, got queue but couldn't come up with the other word.
5 constants word- catchprase
rousseauian- Rousseau a french philosophy intellect
Great Teaser
I was expecting the "devilish" one to be some religious thing I wouldn't get because I'm not Christian. In Greek mythology, there is a deity named Aeaea, so that's what I thought of for a five vowel word even though I knew it had to be wrong. I just gave up and looked at the answer. Great teaser! I loved it!
Love it !!!
Ouch! Tough! Totally mystified by witchcraft. On line with queue but couldn't make it happen
Sorry, but I didn't get anywhere with this one.
Never came up with the first, but the 2nd was easy. Thanks for posting.
Did anyone else notice that this was teaser of the day on June 28, 2006, too. It must be my day!
kasiecom, 'catchphrase' has 6 consonants in a row (when spelled correctly).

yy ur yy u b i c ur yy 4 me.
Clever, Babe! I got as far as queue and then stopped! Too early for me right now! Have a great day, everyone!
Got queueing straight away but got stuck on my first thought involving imp work somehow. When I couldn't I gave up.
DEVILISHLY is a TERRIBLE hint- It the are 2 different parts of speech. It is like using sagely for a clue to wiseman. BOO
Didn't get it right even with the hint but Fred is a bigger dufus than I am.
"Devilishly tricky" is a hint, not a definition, therefore the part of speech means little. I suggest you read your Aesop.
I got "queuing" but (without considering the hint "devilish") thought of "strengths" - as the 5-consonant word.
The funniest part of the whole teaser was that they missed the turn off to Wheeling.
well done
For Fred's word I was thinking of the old standby - a nine letter word with only one vowel: Strengths.
Gr8 fun teaser thanks; solved the second, but for the first I had: 'Psychopath'( thinking, devilish, tricky )?!
Good teaser. Suitably entertaining as well as challenging.
Speaking of 'queues' ... here's a twist.
The Editors at Braingle guarantee each submittal is placed 'en queue' (serial order?) and that each will be judged and reported 'within one week'.
Turns out both of those 'guarantees' are violated frequently (if not constantly).
Does that make their 'guarantee' a ............ 'faux queue' ?
If you don't 'get it' .... try saying it aloud.
HILARIOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For Fred I used "handspring". I did not get Nikita's because queuing has only four vowels. Not a fan of this one. However, I did enjoy the humor in the answer.
I apologize and stand corrected. While queuing is a verb, queueing is a valid noun referring to the act of queuing.
They are queuing in front of the ticket booth.
Queueing leads to civility.
Note, queueing is underlined as a misspelling in the Braingle comment text box.

I also got the second one with no problem. The first one completely eluded me. It was a fun teaser to try and figure out though.
