Brain Teasers
Shirley Tate
Mystery
Mystery teasers are little stories where you need to figure out what happened based on the given clues.Mystery
The home of Shirley Tate was completely dark as Shadow and Kareem knocked on the front door. "As I said," murmured Kareem, "This is not like her at all. She hasn't answered her phone all day, and being late for our date is totally out of character." Shadow tried the door and found it unlocked. They stepped into the front hall and called out, but there was no answer. Kareem tried the front light switch, but nothing happened. "I'll try the light at the other end of the hall," offered Kareem, feeling his way along the wall. Kareem flipped the switch, casting light on the body of Shirley sprawled across the hall floor. She had been shot in the back. Kareem turned around and gasped in horror, grabbing his stomach. "This little scene makes you look rather guilty of murder," accused Shadow. Why?
Answer
Shadow noticed that Kareem only noticed the body on his way back. Therefore, when Kareem felt his way down the hall to turn the light on, he must have known the body was on the floor, otherwise he would have tripped over it.Hide Answer Show Answer

no where in the puzzle does it say that Kareem only noticed the body on his way back down the corridor, as your answer explains. what it does say is that Kareem turned around and saw the body. Now if he had just felt his way up the corridor and found the light switch against one of the corridor walls, he then logically must have been facing either the left or right hand wall. therefore to turn around and see the body, means that it was behind him and he had not yet passed it.
it says the body is sprawled across the corridor, it doesnt say where abouts in the corridor the body was. my sons bike was sprawled across the corridor, roughly where the light switch was. i had stopped just inches from it, when i turned (away from the switch, to face the opposite wall) i tripped over it, which i believe the puzzle does say that kareem turned around after switching on the light, not to one side, which would have him facing back down the corridor. if he was facing the light switch as it indicated, ie: "feeling his way along the wall" and to do that you have to face the wall, so to turn around would mean to face the opposite wall, and the body could be sprawled across the floor inches from him. re-read the puzzle and find the bit where it says he looked back down the corridor, or where the body was in an area which he had already passed.try it yourself, feel along the corridor at home, turn on the light and turn around, and look where the body would be if it was behind you like the teaser implies. it is quite possible to be almost stood on the body with out seeing it. kareem looked behind him, ie: towards the opposite wall, not back down the corridor.
it would be better worded: "Kareem flipped the switch. He turned around, then gasped in horror, grabbing his stomach. Light was cast on the body of Shirley sprawled across the hall floor. She had been shot in the back." And she is sprawled ACROSS the hall floor, eliminating the possibility that her body was off to the opposite side of the hallway that Kareem had passed by. MAD-ADE, does this satisfy you? =)
The logic in this puzzle seems pretty weak
to me. Any decent defense attorney should
shred a case that was based only on such
reasoning. He might have tripped over the
body if he didn't know it was there, but
he also could have stepped over it by
coincidence. He also might have sensed
a dim shape in the darkened hallway that
he stepped over without realizing what
it was. If he did know the body was
there, he still could have tripped over
it in the dark if he couldn't see it
at all. It's not likely, after
all, that he had paced off the exact
distance to the body beforehand.
If he could sense it well enough to avoid
it while knowing it was there, he could probably
sense it well enough to avoid it without
previous knowledge.

I liked the story line! Keep up the good work and learn from these guys! Can't wait to see your next one!
It was a good one and these peoples are just being hypocrites. LETS SEE YOUR TEASERS THEN! Don't get me wrong I do agree in one area, that it could use improvement but every teaser could use it. Not a single ones perfect!
Yes, but why? What was his motive?
I read this story AFTER it had been CORRECTED and enjoyed it!
Easy but fun!

How big was the hall? Was it so small that a person moving along the WALL, would necessarily have bumped into a body sprawled across the hall floor?
idk..i go into a dark room expecting to stumble or trip. Also, it just says "sprawled across" which doesn't necessarily mean touching both walls
I thought it was because he suspiciously knew where the back switch was
to dewtell, it says it makes him look suspicious, not that it directly incriminates him.
A person who has no alibi looks suspicious when a crime is committed that definetly doesn't make them the culprit.
I say it was a good teaser.

I agree with the others, the body could have easily been across the way from him, and since he was pressed close to the wall it shouldn't make him look suspicious. Poorly worded.
