Union Jack
Trick
Trick brain teasers appear difficult at first, but they have a trick that makes them really easy.Trick
When would you see the Union Jack flying over Buckingham Palace?
Answer
You won't!The Union Flag, as it is correctly known, can be seen flying over Buckingham Palace when the monarch is not in residence.
Contrary to popular belief, it is only called the Union Jack when it is being flown on the jack mast of a seafaring vessel.

Good one! This one might fit in trivia more properly.
Didn't know it was called the Union Flag or Union Jack. Learned something new.

And if you aren't British?
Umm...okay teaser....I think it would be better suited for trivia also.
I'm not British, so this is 1. very boring, and 2. impossible to even guess unless I was sitting in front of an encyclopedia.

I agree. it was a bit boring. I had absolutly no idea what you were talking about. O well.

My British friends insist that in normal usage the term Union Jack is always used, and that there is not any official rule that states otherwise.
Seems there is disagreement on the term, and whether or not the word "jack" refers to the Jack pole on a ship, or is a reference to the King of England that first designed the flag.
Enough British trivia for the day!

I agree that this would fit more properly into 'Trivia', but don't take to heart the comments about your trivia being 'boring' -
it was far from it- those others should just get out more.
great teaser- I love it

Yeah - should be under trivia. Also appears to be inaccurate - maybe that is the trick.
See "Union Jack" on wikipedia.

I don't think any teaser can be boring if you learn something from it. Please remember, Brainglers, that we are an International Community.
You aren't supposed to learn anything from TRICK teasers
This is more trivia than trick. I think it's not that good to have teasers that require uncommon knowledge to solve.
Fun, easy and entertaining teaser. I got this one very quickly.
This teaser would be good but is now out of date. Since the death of Princess Diana, the Union Jack is in fact flown at Buckingham Palace if the Queen (or now the King) isn't in residence. The royal standard indicates the monarch is in residence and originally there was otherwise no flag. But after Diana's death, the Queen was at Balmoral with the family for privacy and the public was confused about the absence of a flag at half mast - hence the change.
The flag has always been known as the Union Jack. Some people have been trying to make everyone say "Union Flag," which is supposedly more correct, but Union Jack has been the common name since the 17th century and the Oxford English Dictionary states that it is the usual form.
