Brain Teasers
Fallen Sign
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
Forgetful Lisa from the east and attentive Sue from the west were heading cross country and all the way up the north coast to Georgestown, for the wedding of their great friend Bob from the south.
Bob had given directions to his friends to ensure their timely arrival. Lisa and Sue met up with each other, and decided they would share the trip north, and travel together. They also decided to drive the 3000 mile journey continuously, figuring they could do it in 2 days if they alternate the driver.
They started off and were making good time, travelling through a part of the country neither of them knew. Both being from the city, they loved the country towns they drove through. However, the weather started to pick up wind and rain, developing into a terrible storm. They took shelter for an hour and drove on.
They finally came to a crossroads, where a sign lay on the ground. Lisa got out and cursed herself for forgetting the map. She had no idea how the sign should be orientated. They were getting worried now, the time they had wasted sheltering, plus the time it would take to travel back to the last town would surely make them miss the wedding. Sue however got out and had a look at the sign, got into the driver's seat, took the correct turn and they made it to Georgestown in time for the celebrations!
How was she sure she was taking the right road?

How was she sure she was taking the right road?
Answer
ATTENTIVE Sue had remembered the names of the towns they had passed through on the way they came. She could then tell what way the sign should point and could be confident about picking the right road.Hide Answer Show Answer

EEEEASSSSY....I knew the length of the riddle was connected to the riddle and because of that I knew that those labels given at the beggining had something to do with it...this is the first time I've heard this and I knew this instantly.

I was learnt this as part of basic map reading and survival skills in the boy scouts about twenty years ago. I don't know how you can claim it as your own, millions of scouts have been taught this over the past 100 years or so.

Stardust: there are many adults using this site. This has been used as a teaching aid in Scoutign for well over 30 years. It even appears in some very old Scout Association hand books.
