surely every time you use a pencil to write, you are releasing the lead?
graphite is actually what people use
to build on im_para_noid's point: lead was what was people originally used in pencils, but they had to hold the pencils up to a candle before they wrote with them to slightly melt the lead enough to leave a mark on the paper. But the problem was thet it got all gloppy and somethimes took awhile to melt. So now they use graphite. (sorry, it's a pet peev of mine... did you notice? )
To revisit Mad Ade's point, it is released, a little at a time, whenever it's used.
"Pencil Lead" is graphite, you are correct.. but.. so? It still fits, doesn't it? ;)
