Brain Teasers
Car in the River
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
A man was driving alone in his car when he spun off the road at high speed. He crashed through a fence and bounced down a steep ravine before the car plunged into a fast-flowing river. As the car slowly settled in the river, the man realized that his arm was broken and that he could not release his seat belt and get out of the car. The car sank to the bottom of the river. He was trapped in the car. Rescuers arrived two hours later, yet they found him alive. How come?
Answer
The river was not deep - the water only came up to the man's chest.Hide Answer Show Answer

Does it still count as a river if it is that shallow? And shouldn't this puzzle go in the trick section?
Wouldn't the river be a creek if it was so shallow
his car could either have settled in a shallow portion of the river (yes, they do exist), the river's edge, or a sandy shoal.
Obviously none of you live near Los Angeles. We have a river and it's shallow, but a river none the less
I thought that maybe he used the airbags for air....or he could of been delivering a whole bunch of bags with fish in it....they are never filled with water anyways, usually 1/4 air....but I was reaching for answers.
oh come on, he was obviously planning to go scuba diving later, so he was already wearing all his equipment, including his oxygen tank...i mean really, how else could it be
I was thinking there was an air bubble because the windows were up.
But then again, there are fine cracks, aren't there, so I guess that wouldn't work. =) I guess that's why I stick to riddles.

so he can get into his car, put his seatbelt on, and drive - but he can't get his seatbelt off?

Well, he broke his arm in the crash and couldn't undo it.
Uh, couldn't he just use his other arm?
