Fender Bender
Mystery
Mystery teasers are little stories where you need to figure out what happened based on the given clues.Mystery
"Jon Banks doesn't look much like a murderer," said Sheriff Frost as a young man emerged from the farmhouse carrying a naked baby boy.
The sheriff stopped the patrol car behind Banks' yellow Sedan. He drew his pistol, whispered to Dr. Smith to wait, and called: "Raise your hands, Jon!"
Banks halted, amazed. He set his infant son carefully on the fender of his car and lifted his hands. "What's it all about, Sheriff?"
"Murder. We have a witness who says you entered Moose Long's bar last night after closing. Half an hour later, Mrs. Long found Moose strangled to death with a yellow scarf."
"That's a lie. Why --"
"Look out!" cried Smith, as the baby scampered onto the yellow hood. Cooing happily, he attempted to stand. Smith just saved him from toppling to the ground.
"The witness is mistaken, Sheriff," Banks resumed calmly. "I've been in this car driving down from Philadelphia since eight o'clock last night. I just arrived five minutes ago."
The sheriff looked at his watch. "Then you drove the six hundred miles between Philly and here in a little over twelve hours," he said dubiously.
"Can you prove I didn't?" snapped Banks.
"Nothing could be easier," declared Smith.

Answer
Fenders get really hot after driving for a long time. Banks put his naked baby on the car. The baby would have gotten hurt from the heat, but didn't. This means the car hadn't been driven for a long period of time.Hide Answer Show Answer

I still think he's innocent
It's obvious - the little kid did it.
umm, okay, engines get hot, and the hood often would be very warm (not always), however, fenders would not necessarily be all that warm.
First, if it had been raining, or was not all that warm, the fender would not be hot to the point of burning the child.
Second, the baby might have been on the fender of a car with the engine in back...old VW bug, or any number of sports cars.
Third, the baby could have been on the rear fender of a front engine car.

But the baby clambered from the fender to the hood, so he wasn't on the rear fender. Car hoods get pretty hot after a long drive, except for some hybrids.
It was really a great teaser, and well-written!

i think that u got this off some book. i already saw this somewhere.
i looked over this one. i didn't say anything bad about it though. Great job. I suggest that you make more of these.
The tittle kind of gives away the answer. But I really enjoyed it. Next time, try to make it really harder. Thanks
The idea came from one of the mysteries in the Encyclopedia Brown series (hey a rhyme!) So you're right, Fire_Shell96.
I got the answer straight away, but it was still fun! I like your teasers!
WOW! i need some pointers from you
it was good but i dont think i would hav guessed it
I heard this in a book of puzzles when I was younger. It didn't come back to me until I saw the answer though...
Good one! But I feel it very easy!
In fact, up to the moment when the Sheriff was telling him why he was under suspicion, I thought that the innocent claim was to be a long drive and that baby will break the alibi.
Anyway, I like these mystery ones with crimes and intelligent inspectors..
Who was Smith anyway? Was it part of the story in the encyclopedia?

I liked it, but I too found it very easy because I'd read an Encyclopedia Brown story many years ago with a similar theme.
The hood of the car would have been much too hot for a baby to crawl upon had he driven that great a distance just 5 minutes before.

Huzzah!!! I think that's the first one I've gotten right!!! I think it was in an Encyclopedia Brown....
Wow, grilledcheese, you're like my braingle idol
WOW!! i learned something new about that!
The "hood" of many cars would not be that hot.
Many newer cars have insulation that reduces the heat, and more importantly, there are rear engine cars, so the front hood would not be hot at all.
Do hybrid engines get as warm as combustion engines?

Yes, car hoods do in fact get hot...
Well done!!!
keep them coming!!!
keep them coming!!!
Cute, well written, fun, and very easy. I enjoyed it.
Thank you Encyclopedia Brown
oh my this teaser was so ripped off some book i read a while ago
Ahh. I didn't think of that. I was thinking he just had a guilt conscience or something.
This one I read in the early 70's.
I believe the stories featured a young detective by the name of Leroy Brown!
SourDough thanks you for the memories!

I thought it was hard
way too easy...but fun still....
that was a pretty cool quiz
I think that was not the right answer.
Not all cars get warm when drove in a long period of time (depends on the model) Is there any evidence?

i figured he put him on the fender so he could kill his baby because he's a bloody murderer :| i got the fender concept right. lolz
Looking at the Clue from a mathematical point of view, he committed the Murder because it takes five hours to drive two hundred miles, so he would have driven at least sixteen hours, not twelve. The more simple version is the heat generated from the car causing the fender or the hood of the car to generate high levels of Heat.
Excellent Stress reliever.

I am disappointed if in fact, Grille Cheese took this idea from another Author. Not Cool. I liked this teaser, but is it true that a fender is below the Hood of the car?
If no one Complains, then why should I...
