Brain Teasers
Where Am I 2
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
You find yourself half way between Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro; about as far from Mexico City as from Moscow.
Albert Einstein waits to the left, ready to explain his theory of relativity. A short distance to your right James Watt hopes to recount his development of the steam engine to you. John Steinbeck and Isaac Bashevis Singer crouch over you, vying for your attention.
Your surroundings are conventional and functional. One aspect stands out: A piece of furniture - represented in 2 or 3 specimens in the typical home - recurs here hundreds of times.
What is this piece of furniture, and where are you?

Answer
The answer is a book shelf. The setting is a library, which typically has dozens or hundreds of bookshelves. You are standing in front of the "S" nonfiction section.Hide Answer Show Answer

What are Steinbeck and Singer doing in the non-fiction section? Unless you're standing in the 92's looking at biographies- and then your clue about Tokyo and Rio doesn't work Time to head back to the library for more research? A+ for the idea, C for the execution.
I think Unklemyke is the quintessential critic on Braingle - always on point, but with just enough "edge" for much-needed humor. lol
TRILLIONAIRE cannot respond personally - he broke both arms, patting himself on the back. But with all that dough he'll get top-notch medical attention, and be back in no time!
File this comment under 'Non-Fiction', of course.

Oh, myke! The clue works. You're at the S section between the books about Tokyo from the T section and those about Rio de (damn, I forgot the spelling) from the R section. Mexico City and Moscow books are both from the M section just nearby.
