Brain Teasers
Half a Cup
You are making a certain type of cake that requires half a cup of water. Unfortunately, you only have one that fills up to 1 cup, and another that fills up to 3 quarters of a cup. How can you measure half a cup?
Hint
If you fill 1 cup of water and you pour 3 quarters of a cup to fill the other cup, how much water remains in the larger cup?Answer
Fill 1 cup of water, then pour it into the other cup so that a quarter of water remains in the larger cup. Then, empty the 3 quarter cup and pour the 1 quarter that is in the other cup into the 3 quarter cup. Fill 1 cup of water again, and pour the water into the 3 quarter cup until full, and you should have half a cup of water in the larger cup.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

Oops You can also pour three quarters of a cup into one and pour it into the other, then fill it up again, pour one quarter into the other to fill it and get half in the three quarter cup. My bad
Ya, fill the 3/4 cup, empty into 1 cup cup, that way the 1 cuppcup has 3/4 water. Next, fill the 3/4 cup and the pour into the 1 cupcup until full and 2/4 will remain in the 3/4 cup.
Yay!I got it right.
I get it haha but hey i have a question what do you do to get POSITIVE KARMA? i dont know how to get it
you could fill the first cup half way, ya know. Measuring cups have lines for a reason.
easy one!!
Alternatively, since you are making a cake, and you don't need to have 1/2 cup in a container...you can fill up the 1-cup...and then pour that in the 3/4-cup and pour the remaining 1/4 cup in the bowl...then do it again...
1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2
1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2
I got the answer as it was posted but then read that there are easier ways! I like the comment above mine. Since it's a cake, you just need 1/4 twice which is easy.
