The pips (dots) on opposite faces of a die always add up to 7 i.e. 6&1, 5&2, and 4&3.
Knowing this, determining the total is quite simple, because one die therefore has 21 pips (7 pips X 3 pairs of faces) i.e. since a cube has six faces, and therefore two dice have 42 (21 X 2) pips.
