Brain Teasers
Unlock The Caps Secret
Group
These brain teasers rely on your ability to recognize groups of common attributes. For each of these puzzles you'll need to figure out why the words or letters are grouped as they are. Sometimes you will be asked to pick the odd-one-out or to place a new word into the correct group.Group
Which word below is the odd-one-out of the group?
CLAM
DAM
LAW
LYE
PAY
THE
UP
CLAM
DAM
LAW
LYE
PAY
THE
UP
Hint
The words must be in capital letters. Also, a double-letter word would not belong in the group.Answer
PAYAll of the other words in the group consist of letters formed by a number of segments which increases by 1 with each successive letter in the word, as follows:
CLAM
1234
DAM
234
LAW
234
LYE
234
THE
234
UP
12
The exception is the word "PAY":
PAY
233
If the third letter was formed by 4 segments rather than 3, then the word would belong in the group as well.
For example, if the third letter was "W" instead of "Y", making the word "PAW", then it would belong in the group.

How are there no comments on this? What a terrific teaser! Original and damn hard, but really good! Very nice, TFF.
I got distracted by the Title, and thought about the words if CAPS had been unlocked. I excluded LYE, because if written in lower case it is the only word with both a stem ('l') and a tail ('y').
Very clever. It is hard to invent new teasers, but you came up with a great one here.

Thanks for your comments, Snowdog.
Sorry I don't understand this - can you explain please? What do you mean 'number segments'?
In the answer it says "a number of segments", not "number segments". If you reread the answer, I think the explanation is quite clear. Thanks.
