Brain Teasers
The Antisocial Club
The Antisocial Club meets every week at Jim's Bar. Since they are so antisocial, however, everyone always sits as far as possible from the other members, and no one ever sits right next to another member. Because of this, the 25-stool bar is almost always less than half full and unfortunately for Jim the members that don't sit at the bar don't order any drinks. Jim, however, is pretty smart and makes up a new rule: The first person to sit at the bar has to sit at one of two particular stools. If this happens, then the maximum number of members will sit at the bar. Which stools must be chosen? Assume the stools are numbered 1 to 25 and are arranged in a straight line.
Hint
Don't forget - the people sit as far away from each other as possible. If stool #1 is chosen first, the next person will always sit in stool #25.Answer
The first person must take either stool 9 or 17 (because of symmetry, it doesn't matter which). Assume they pick seat 9. The next person will pick seat 25, since it is the furthest from seat 9. The next two people will take Seats one and 17. The next three will occupy 5, 13, and 21. The next six will occupy 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, and 23. This seats the maximum of 13 people, and no one is sitting next to another person. If a seat other than 9 or 17 is chosen first, the total bar patrons will be less than 13.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

very good, but if they were really that anti social then they wouldn't go to a club in the first place.
Socaial Anxiety Disorder, heh? If people had S.A.D. they wouldn't go in the first place. Glad I could clear that up It's a favorite of mine anyways.
Hey Curly, do you still see Larry and Mo these days?
Hey Curly, shouldn't you be dead. Oh wait, I just remembered, I'm not in heaven yet. You'll sure be gone then.
Its a good logic teaser. Its true that if they were antisocial they wouldnt go to the club in the first place, however thats not the point. It s a good one.
I think this teaser wasn't hard but they weren't to clear in the question. So the way I read it made it sound like the next person that went to sit down sat farthest away from the last person that sat down. So i got 9 & 17 at first but some of my other answers were not the same. Like after 5, 13 isn't the farthest away, 21 is. That is how I interpreted it.
i don't think anyone's THAT antisocial! I would know...I'm antisocial ...Anyway, GREAT TEASER!
I'm not anti social..just buy me a beer!
great teaser
great teaser
What hateful people What kind of social club that if it's antisocial?! That doesn't make any sense. Good one
I think I meant to as,k what kind of social club is it if it's antisocial?!
I think I'm retarded...

if they are anitsocial, how would that plan spread
"i don't think anyone's THAT antisocial!"
Wanna bet?
Wanna bet?
im not anti social , so.... whatever
i didn't read it is to long and my head started to hurt.
it's either that or i am lazy and dont want to read.

I don’t understand why the first seat to be taken couldn’t be any odd numbered seat. For example the first person sits at 5, so the next one will sit furthest away at 25. The next will sit on 15 because that is the one furthest from both etc. until all odd numbered seats are filled. So the answer could be any two odd numbered seats.
That won't work, tommo. If you have people in seats 5, 15 and 25 at first, the next people in will want to sit in seats 10 and 20. Then there will be only 11 seats taken at most: 1, 3, 5, 7 or 8, 10, 12 or 13, 15, 17 or 18, 20, and 22 or 23.
Oops, forgot the person in seat 25! That makes 12 people, still not the maximum of 13.
The original count of 11 was correct. No more counting for me until I have a nap.
Of course! I didn't think that through. Thanks Gizzer.
WHAT!!!!!!!!!????????? That made no sense to me at all!!!
okay I kind of get it... but I looove the name of the club!!
Took me a while to understand the answer, but it does make sense I think. Once again I'm not real good with logic teasers. I guess my logic is not necessarily the same as others. Good teaser.
EASY-EASY-EASY Also another repeat. I guess the editors are christmas shopping and don't have time to find new teasers!!!
i liked this one.
Meh.
A lot better than the quizzes... I can't take any more Disney lyrics.
That was a goodun, but, kinda harder than I wanted to deal with. I would 've had to actually use a real life paper and peyonsull, LOL, and THEN work out several different options before finding the right one, and... I DIDNT FEEL LIKE it!
But that's how teasers are sposed to be, so, THANKS for the good teaser!!!

excellent teaser... obviously all odd # chairs need to be taken for max occupancy... that was the easy part... finding which 2 chairs forced that pattern... well, that took me awhile to figure out... love it... send another this way when you can
I definetly need more coffee to understand this one!!

This doesn't make sense. "As far away as possible" doesn't mean that they can't sit next to each other if that's all that is available.
Fun, thanks, but too hard for me. However I think you can avoid all the questions about the anti-social premise ... just change the story to be about men choosing urinals in a rest room.
Gave me some trouble, even though I knew it had to be an odd numbered stool I got hung up on which would be first.
As a math problem, something more in rules should be added to make sense of it. For example, why can't the 14th person sit anywhere between the other 13, the 15th sit anywhere between the other 14, and so on?
The problem states that at any time, less than half of the 25 people are at the bar....isn't that 12 people? I assumed that was the given maximum, so I started figuring by assuming that was the maximum.
Obviously, words were not conveying the picture well to this little mind.

JD318 - the directions state that no one ever sits right next to another.
I didn't have time to work on this one today, but I think it's a good teaser.

That was a good teaser, cause it made my brain hurt. I gave up on it. Thanks for posting. I promise to do better next time.

Great one. Loved it. One of the best teaser's I've played!
I got the right # of people/seats but not by the right method. I didn't read the clue until after, and just had the bartender select #13 for the first to sit and worked outward in each direction ..I ended up not following the directions.
It was so long I didn't try to solve it.
Good stuff those who did
Thanks anyway

love it kind of
this is goofy
Wow, excellent teaser. I just assumed that picking the first or last seat would work before checking the answer, but it sure doesn't!
I love the title, that is what a lot of people think of homeschoolers as! I guess some of them are, but my group is more like hyper-social!!!!
I am sure it was a great teaser for logical thinking people, but since I have part timers it went right over my head. VVVAAARRROOOMMMM.
Ouch...too early to make my brain work that hard I'll take your word that the answer is right!
This was a great teaser! It took me some time but I finally got it. What I don't like about it is that explaining how to get to the answer is way harder than actually getting there.
Ido not like these kind of teaers so did not try.
Easy 11 years ago when it was new, and still easy and old.
If i were antisocial, i'ld stand in a dark corner and observe OR or sit at the bar and take ownership of circumstance. However I'm a butterfly so the bartender and i would have grand ole time! Lol
I'll take your word for it.
I never thought that'd they'd arrive in an orderly fashion. I just went along with the rule that they all must maintain the maximum distance from each other, and put two people at either end and just have one seat between them all; leaving 13 patrons at the row of 25 seats. Guess I worked it out wrong.
