Nice one, Snowdog. The third line was the most instrumental one for me in solving this. Perhaps for someone younger, it would be less so. Excellent work!
Thanks TFF! We may not be old enough to remember the War of the Roses, but we remember Bob Dylan!
How many people subscribe to the New York TImes? Why would we actually know this? I live in California and we do not get that paper. Dumb!!
Well written, but much 2 cryptic & contrived 4 me!
I've purchased many items that were neither shiny nor bright?
The last clue seemed 2 b the only 1 that made any sense?

Nice one! I got it, assuming the "York" part, b/c I didn't know the War of the Roses.
Fun, fairly easy and entertaining teaser. I got it with the hint. Not too hard to figure out with such good clues given.
I live in California too and don't subscribe to the ny times or the la times or the sf chronicle but I've heard of them. You don't need to subscribe to the new York times to know it's one of the most read newspapers in the USA
Oh my! Looks like I had a teaser of the day! Thanks Eds. Thank you all for your comments, both positive and negative. I love hearing what you think. I agree, the War of the Roses was quite a stretch. I didn't expect that to give the answer to anyone, but the other three were meant to lead you to fill in the gap. Contrived? Definitely.
