The Car Accident
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
Hans Ernest Froopaloop, Jr. got into a car accident yesterday. Had he worn a seat belt, he would have died. He didn't, and survived. Why?
Answer
Mr. Froopaloop was thrown out of his car right before it was crushed, escaping with only a broken leg. Had he worn a seat belt, he would have stayed in the car, and wouldn't have had time to get out before getting crushed to death.Hide Answer Show Answer

Getting thrown from the car was my first consideration, but it did not seem sufficiently deterministic. Since "Jr." was specified, I decided instead that Mr. Froopaloop was an infant in a five point restraint car seat. Babies don't do well with an adult shoulder harness seatbelt and standard automobile seat
In the real world being thrown from a car means you have to be smashed through a windscreen which will leave you in a vegetive state at the very least. However, as a teaser I liked it. Made me think!
