Brain Teasers
Car Boot Sale
Mad Ade recently found just the things he wanted at a car-boot sale.
The way their prices were displayed was interesting.
FIVE for 10p
TWELVE for 18p
FIFTEEN for 20p
NINETEEN for 24p
Mad Ade eventually worked out the 'logic' of the prices.
What did ELEVEN cost him?

nice one... i was looking at patterns with the fractions 1/2 - 2/3 - 3/4 but then the 19 and 24 got me... good job
This problem seems to have a cook which gives the answer of 19p
based on the number of straight line strokes required to produce each number i.e. E = 4, L = 2, V = 2, N = 3

I like old petes answer better. Its a pretty cool coincidence
Not that it really matters, why do you always put your name in the word problems
your problems are good and hard, but for some reason I am too lazy to actually work it out. can you post some distance and solution problems?
I found an alternate answer. If you do not count the serifs (which may or may not be present, depending on the font), the value for each number could be based on the number of straight lines that make up the letters (F has 3, I has 1, V has 2, E has 4, for a total of 10). With this approach, I came up with an answer of 19.
The suggested answer of 19p in the comments has one flaw - eleven cost more than twelve. The given answer seems a bit random.
