Brain Teasers
One Dollar Notes
A popular attraction at an exhibition was a sealed glass box containing 500,000 dollar notes. This was a fundraiser where for $10 a ticket a person could guess how many notes the box contained. At the end of the exhibition, when the seal was broken and the notes counted, there was only $470,000. Mr Koorc was responsible for enclosing the money. When questioned by Mr Ecilop, he said that he had personally counted every note by hand and to be sure, he had counted every note twice by hand during the five day exhibition. He insisted he may have been off by 80 or 90 dollars, but not 30,000! Mr Ecilop insists he is lying and arrests him immediately, but how can he be so sure?
Answer
It wouldn't have been possible to count the notes. Even once by hand and averaging one note per second, it would have taken over a week of nonstop counting.Hide Answer Show Answer

500 000 SECONDS = 8333 MINUTES = 138 HOURS = 5.78 DAYS......... interesting!
if it was a fundraiser, why didnt they just use the money in the box instead of making people pay to guess how many notes there are?
thats stupid, ever seen a bank clerk count notes, or whoever cashes up at the end of the day in retail outlets. I asure you it takes them less than a second per note. besides how can you add that condition (ie: that mr koorc) after you have asked the question.
First of all, in the passage Mr Koorc was never labelled a bank clerk, second, EVEN IF HE HAD counted faster than a note per second it still wouldn't work as he would have had to spend time eating, sleeping, exercising etc. Thirdly, Maybe Mr Koorc started off counting the notes faster than one per second, but after doing this for a long time you would become bored, agitated and your counting rate would have slown down! Aristotle, if you have been more of a philosopher and less of a critic you would have undoubtly realised this.
To supermew the charity part of the question was setting was really irrelevent to the actual question in the teaser. However to answer you, the exhibit and attraction were popular and perhaps the organisers thought they would make more money for charity this way!
Oh, and aristotle, I think you are an example of the pot calling the kettle black. You criticise, but you yourself haven't submitted a teaser!
The problem is that you cannot prove that he is guilty of a crime simply because he lied about counting the money. Some people would feel obliged to lie for fear of losing their job, even though someone else might have stolen the $$. (Who the hell wants to count 500,000 bills anyway?)
Now if you had posted this in a section OTHER than LOGIC, I would let it slide, but not if you call it a logic problem.

I actually suggested for it to be posted in trick.
When the seal was broken at the end of the exhibition, did someone take over a week to count those notes by hand at the exhibition location?
1)If he counted it by hand during the 5 day exhib., then how could the people guess how much there was because he was counting it?
2)If he counted it during the exhib. then why did he count it again because he already knew how much was in there.

yes. and how could he count or recount the bills during the five exhibition days if the glass box was sealed?
Names are hard aren't they Glennyboy? Hmm?
Gleenyboy, this was a good teaser, but in every good detective story, many facts are given. In this you basically told a story like this...(continued on next comment)
They could have counted the notes at the end of the fund raiser with a money counting machine.
I enjoyed this teaser. Uh, who is aristotle?
