Brain Teasers
The Impossible Murder
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
It was a dark night when John's car had run out of gas and he was forced to pull over on the side of the road and call for assistance. Well, while John was pulled over on the road, he decided to turn on the radio and listen to the news while he waited for the tow truck. A few minutes into listening to the radio, he had heard a bulletin about a murderer on the loose for a brutal stabbing in the very county he had broken down in. Well, this left John with a little bit of uneasiness, so for safety's sake, he locked his doors, rolled up the windows, and shut his car off so that it would not bring any attention in case the murderer was lurking nearby. Ten minutes later, John was getting even more anxious and scared so he double, then triple checked to make sure he had locked all the doors, and all the windows were rolled up. After doing this, John felt a little better and he started to relax and wait for the tow truck.
Ten minutes later the tow truck arrived and John had been stabbed by the murderer. How could the murderer have killed John?

Silly me, thought he was the murderer and killed himself.
I thought perhaps the murderer was driving a tow truck that happened by before the real one.
I thought he was in a hatchback and hadn't locked the boot!
well didnt think it was a convertabale plus through the story you said he ran out of gas, then you said he shut the car off? dont under stand if you run out of gas the car is already off.

i thought that the murderer had gotten in the car before he locked all the windows and stuff and john or whahs his face couldnt get out! heee he
Good Teaser! I thought John was the murderer and he was uneasy because he knew the police were after him.
Um, I thought the murderer just broke the window.
it never stated that john was in a convertible so how was anybody going to get it right?
Oops. Sorry for the blank post. I thought the murderer just cut the door.
I thought he either didn't close the trunk door or that he locked the car door, but it didn't close completely. That answer's better though, good one.
I thought it would make more sense if the murderer got into the back seat when John got out to call the tow truck, then John locked himself in with him.
I had two idea's. One was the same as angel's. I also thought he might of had a sunroof and forgot to close it.
Clever, I thought that he turned the lights off and didn't see that the man was the murderer or that he had a knife!
great teaser, love the mood that was set! I thought straight away that the murderer had hid in the backseat of the car, convertable idea is a good one too thought! Definately one of my favs

I didn't like it that much because it never stated that the man was driving a convertable!
If he was out of gas, why did he have to turn off the car. No one with any brains would run a car off a battery for any amount of time. The battery would die because the enging wouldn't be running to run the alternator to keep the battery charged.
I thought maybe the murderer was in the car the whole time and stabbed him (or sneaked in before he heard the radio announcement).
I also thought that the killer had climbed in the back seat before he locked the car. Where did a convertible come from?
This teaser is good but it sux cause nowhere in the teaser did it state that he was driving a convertible. Ergo, that causes the reader to believe that the killer snuck into the car while he was making the call. Then when he locked the doors the killer carved him like a thanksgiving turkey MUAHAHAHAHAHA MUAHAHAHAHAHA MUAHAHAHAHA ('')

didn't even come close, never crossed my mind about a convertible well done
i thought having the car as a convertible required too much guess work (rather than being stated in the teaser).
i guessed that the murderer was already in the car with him
i guessed that the murderer was already in the car with him
yup, i thought the murderer was already in there or that the guy was the murderer himself...heehee
YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD US HE WAS IN A CONVERTble!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My friend thought it was the tow truck driver while i thought YOU SHOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT A CONVERTABLE ..but nice try practice.makes.perfect!!
whoa
I thought the murderer came in through the trunk. (like in the really big cars, or a van, or jeep, or suv....etc.)
Because you didn't mention the fact that he was in a convertible, this could have easily been accepted as a "situation" teaser also.

the murderer could have just stabbed his knife through the window... DUH!!
The fact that there was no indication that John was in a convertible is exactly the point of this teaser...
That's the whole point of lateral puzzles, the important stuff isn't stated. It's supposed to keep you guessing
This teaser should be in the "Trick" section, I think. It seems impossible, but has a simple solution. I thought, since he triple checked the locks, he opened them, locked them, then opened them again, leaving him vulnerable to the murderer.
But, despite all, this is a pretty entertaining teaser!

You can keep a car running via the engine even though there is no gas.
I thought it did it to himself too and I was like wtf he do that for, man that was a scary thought.
This is a Situation teaser. That means it is better suited for freinds who can ask yes or no questions in order to find out that there was a convertible. Gosh!
Ugh.....
