Christmas Day and New Year's
Everyone knows that both Christmas Day and New Year's Day always fall on the same day of the week. However, in 1939, the year of the outbreak of World War II, Christmas fell on a Monday and New Year's fell on a Sunday. Why?
Answer
In any given year Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall on different days of the week. Christmas occurs around 51 weeks later in the year than New Years Day. 1939 was no different.Hide Answer Show Answer

why is this a trick question?
Hey that was a great one! Well worded too! Even after I read the answer it took me a minute to realise they fall on the same day in different years! Terrific Michelle.
Good 1! -luvupurple
Good one! Deserves a better rating, I feel.
ok my maths has failed me somewhere
if the 25th of december is on monday, the 26th is on tuesday, the 27th is on wednesday, the 28th on thursday, the 29th on friday, the 30th of saturday, the 31st on sunday, and therefore the 1st is on monday.
what am i missing people?

That was really good.
I agree with sweet. I'm lost. Can someone explain it please?
Hehe that was tricky...
count from New Year's to Christmas, not Christmas to New Year's, right? That was good...
I understand the answer....but I feel the teaser is a bit vague.....unsure of how to fix it and still keep it "mystic"....
So why did you say "Everyone knows that both Christmas Day and New Year's Day always fall on the same day of the week." JUST to throw us off? *picks up his ringing phone* "What??? That's the point of tricks???" OMG
Michelle said "In 1939." New years day is in the next year. So that means the teaser meant Jan 1, 1939 and December 25, 1939. Those two dates (in any year) are never on the same day of the week. Get it? (sorry, i explain in a n odd way). Good job Michelle!
In that case the first sentence with regards to the two days being the same in the year is wrong working in the order of New Year's Day to Christmas Day (Jan to Dec)
i don't get it.
i thot christmas, new years, sunday, and monday were people and they..um...fell on each other?
I don't really get it
The question and the answer contradict each other:
Q:"Everyone knows X-mas and NY's Day always fall on the same day of the week."
A:"X-mas and NY's Day never fall on the same day of the week."
What is that about? It made absolutely no sense...

The first part of the teaser refers to peoples' tendency to pair any Christmas with the New Year's that immediately follows it, which is on the same weekday. The second part makes it clear that you have to pair the Christmas with the New Year's that comes BEFORE it, which is in the same year (1939), but on a different weekday.
This was really good!
I had to think about it for a minute, but it's really not hard to understand. Pretty simple concept, really.

Excellent teaser! I thought there was a 'General Christmas' that died in 1939.
umm im usually not negative but 1.) ive seen this on several other sites, and 2.) what is "tricky" about logic with deviation?
simply stating something and then stating the exact OPPOSITE in the answer is not a trick.. its just dumb. fail.

I am sorry... I don't understand it. Could somebody please explain?
The point is to catch u slipping. The goal was to feed u one bit of info to bait u, then pose the real question at hand and if u analyze it, u realize all the info needed is there to come to that conclusion
I liked that especially since it's related to a date I found oddly also falls on the same day of that year with new years and Xmas, which is the 24th July, yes I understand that because it's new year's we actually regard it in a Different year, which is pretty clever but how come the 24th July is the only other day that runs parallel with those holidays ?
