Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
A man is sitting in a broken-down car in the desert, waiting to be rescued. He turns a page in the book he's reading, a fiction novel. He then grabs a gun from the glove compartment and shoots himself. Why?
Hint
It doesn't matter how he got there, what he was reading, or why he had a gun.Answer
He was a hemophiliac and when he turned the page, he got a big paper-cut. Rather than bleed to death, he decided on a less painful death.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

he must be a seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerious hemophiliac...
Yeah, you can't really bleed to death from a papercut.
dying by loss of blood wouldn't really be painful, you'd probably just get a little woozy. And you have to figure that he's not a Catholic
(suicide is a cardinal sin, ie. Catholics believe you won't get to heaven if you kill yourself)

Have you ever bled to death? J.K. it's a good point. And if it were a really big cut, or on a vein, it's possible.
never would have guessed!great job.i wonder what would happen if he got a papercut on that large vein in your neck...?
I'm sorry; I just can't help but say that this is an absolutely ridiculous puzzle. These things should be REASONABLY solveable, after all. How about the answer "When he turned the page he saw an image which reminded him of the time his mother skinned his cat alive and was so distressed he decided to kill himself?" I don't like to be negative or overly criticizing, but this one is simply not a quality puzzle.
dpniner, it's worth noting that Situation puzzles are SUPPOSED to have hideously obtuse answers. I thought it was a reasonably good teaser. Still, paper cuts don't bleed all that fast to begin with (a slow drip at the most) and you can easily give up a pint or so of blood with no problem at all except for the dizziness someone already mentioned.
I loved it................................... but too shoot him self over a paper cut? He must have serous issues ;)
Great teaser, but he could have tore a piece of cloth from his shirt and applied pressure to the cut but still great teaser
There is something quirky about this teaser that I actually like. The hint (and this is unusual), made it more fun. I didn't even think about why dude had a gun in a car in the desert. Kudos to you on this one!
You see Frankenweoburger: I give credit where its due!
wow! i never could have guessed that the man is a haemophiliac. very interesting, though.

You can't say he would or wouldn't bleed to death unless you're a doctor, which I'm assuming none of you are... Were I in this man's situation, I'd probably try direct pressure, pressure points, and a tourniquet before shooting myself. But I thought this was an excellent riddle. Well done.
dpniner, I'd also like to say that in the hint, it was stated something along the lines of: it had nothing to do with what he was reading. But overall, I thought that was clever, and rather unexpected. Great work!

Not enough information to deduce, induce or even guess the correct answer. Any answer would suffice as long as it doesn't contradict the ending.
It's like asking what the equation is to get the number 42. There are infinite equations that could equal 42. Unless you give some critieria, indicating you're expecting a certain one, you can't honestly expect anyone to give you "your" correct answer.

I thought it was a water pistol

I figured that he had been waiting for so long that he figured if he could finish the book before seeing anyone that no one is going to find him, so he kills himself quickly.
Not knowing what a hemophiliac is, this puzzle was rather challenging...
and niveknedarb, that is a really cool answer, probably my favorite answer ever.
